95 Years Ago – July 16, 1931
The ladies of the Holy Rosary Society will give a chicken dinner at the James Devine Sr. home, Sunday, July 19. Children 25¢, Adults 50¢. Everyone is welcome.
Victor Maki, whose Ford sedan was stolen June 29, from its parking place near the Black River was found by the sheriff of Chippewa County at Delavan, and returned to him Monday. The car had been re-painted, new accessories added, and the windshield shattered to avoid detection. While it was gone it was driven more than two thousand miles. The thieves, however, were found.
85 Years Ago – July 17, 1941
At the meeting of the Owen Commercial Club last night, arrangements were made for the club and the businessmen’s organization to jointly sponsor the first annual fall festival to be held on August 14, 15 and 16.
The public of Clark County is extended an invitation by the company officers and personnel of Company 1692, Camp Perkinstown, to visit the camp on Friday afternoon and evening, July 10. All questions regarding CCC life will be answered and a personally conducted tour through the camp will be in store for those attending.
75 Years Ago – July 19, 1951
The Common Council of the City of Owen met in special meeting at 2 p.m. on July 16 for the purpose of taking action on construction bids on the sewage disposal plant and intercepting sewers. Upon opening the bids, it was decided to defer awarding of contracts for a period of 30 days.
Considerable interest was attracted to the building site of the new Alliance Church in Owen this week as 15 men and boys worked to pour the concrete for the foundation walls.
65 Years Ago – July 20, 1961
William Knittle is sifting through the possibilities of two or three business ventures, one of which he will decide on for the future in the near future. Reason being that Monday he sold his business interest in the Standard Station at the corner of Highways 29 and 73 in Withee. Gilbert Cardinal, who enjoys the friendship of quite a few residents of this vicinity is the purchaser. The business transfer will become effective August 7.

The Owen-Withee Area Pharmacy has a new owner and a new pharmacist. Bill Epstein, R.Ph. began as the new pharmacist in charge on July 1, 1981. David J. Prohaska, R.Ph. is the new owner, who also owns the clinical pharmacy in Stanley and the clinical pharmacy in Ladysmith.
Joan Sorenson was back at the bank despite her recent retirement. Two tellers were on vacation and Joan was asked to help out. She retired after 17 years, working as a bank teller at the State Bank of Withee.
Art and LaVerna Marcott of Curtiss celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary with a picnic at Rock Dam. Many relatives and friends gathered at the Marcott’s camper on July 4 to help them commemorate the occasion.

After 10 months of searching for a Pastor, St. John’s Lutheran Church in Withee is pleased to announce the arrival of Rev. Thomas E. Myhre.
Carole Buss, postal employee, and Dennis Lulloff, Withee Postmaster, have been recognized by their peers for demonstrating their commitments to quality service. Dennis and Carole received an Olympic Pride in Performance Bronze Award on behalf of the U.S. Postal Service.
A local Lutheran Brotherhood Branch, Club 8509, distributed $400 worth of wild bird seed to five county nursing homes as part of their Friends of the Environment Project.

Newlyweds, Erik and Tammy Stinson, took a ride on the Ferris Wheel at the Owen Fair on Saturday after they were married at Holy Rosary. Erik and Tammy met at the Owen Fair seven years ago.
15 Years Ago – July 20, 2011
Three candidates have applied for the newly vacant Owen-Withee school board position. The vacancy was created by the resignation of board member Travis Engel, who has been hired by the district for the job of technical education and agriculture teacher.
Marlin Pogodzinski of Withee caught a 34-inch northern on a Johnson Silver Minnow in the Owen Mill Pond.
