95 Years Ago – August 13, 1931
A quiet wedding took place at Chippewa Falls, Wednesday morning, when Miss Edna Thorson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tobias Thorson, of Longwood, was united in marriage to Mr. Lucius Bowen, of Owen.
Floyd McErn of this village, is building a new filling station on Highway 29, just west of the Stevenson & Berger corner. The pouring of concrete for the approach to the station is completed and work on the filling station is now well underway.
85 Years Ago – August 14, 1941
Esther Rasmussen of Withee pleaded guilty before Judge E.W. Crosby in circuit court last Saturday to a charge of deserting her minor children. She was sentenced to from one to two years in the Wisconsin Industrial Home for Women at Taycheedah. The sentence was suspended and she was placed on probation.
For the first time in the last 10 years the Master Package Corporation was forced to temporarily shut down its plant operations for a period of three days because of being unable to secure materials.
75 Years Ago – August 16, 1951
For the first time in many years the Withee businessmen are organized into a regular businessmen’s club. The organizational meeting was held at the State Bank of Withee a week ago Monday night.
A double ring ceremony performed in the parsonage of the Methodist church at Stanley united Joyce Carol Hodnett in marriage to James Walter Ruggles on Saturday, August 4.
65 Years Ago – August 17, 1961
Clark County authorities are checking out clues pertaining to the second break-in within a year at the Silver Dollar Supper Club, southeast of Thorp.
55 Years Ago – August 19, 1971
Lyle Haas, who has served as mayor of the city of Owen for the past 10 months, submitted his resignation in a letter given to city clerk, J.J. Crowley, Thursday of last week.
45 Years Ago – August 13, 1981
The Withee Village Board voted to accept Owen’s proposal to pick up Withee garbage one day a week and dispose of it in the Owen Dump. The city of Owen is to provide the truck and driver, and Withee will provide two men.
Mr. and Mrs. Carl Sillampa moved into their newly purchased home in Owen on Monday of this week. They purchased the former St. Katherine’s parish home located on Third Street next to the church.
35 Years Ago – August 15, 1991
A flag raising ceremony was held Friday, August 9 at the new location of Badger Precision, Inc. at 124 W. Third Street, Owen.
Say the words “most admired senior citizen” and someone immediately comes to mind. Someone whose generous spirit and special talents have touched a lot of our lives is Angela (Angie) Bonk of Owen. She was among those nominated for this award at the Wisconsin State Fair.
25 Years Ago – August 15, 2001
After four years as principal at neighboring Thorp High School, Dan Taft comes back to Owen-Withee High School as its’ principal. Taft has strong ties to Owen-Withee, having spent 23 years at the high school in Technology Education as Vocational Coordinator, which position he will assume again, as he has the certification.
Several Lutheran Brotherhood members gathered Monday morning to make applesauce for our local Indianhead Food Pantry. This is the second year Lutheran Brotherhood #8509 made applesauce for a local charity.
15 Years Ago – August 17, 2011
Final touches are being put on the landscaping and interior of the new VA Clinic in Owen in readiness for opening for patients on September 7.
Arne Laakso invites all of his friends to join him in celebrating his 100th birthday at Meadowview Golf Course on Saturday, August 27, 1-4 p.m.
Thorvald and Joan Frost celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary on Saturday afternoon at the Lions shelter in Withee.
