95 Years Ago – September 3, 1931

85 Years Ago – September 4, 1941
A delegation of eight cars and a sound truck left the city yesterday at noon and returned home at 9:30 in the evening after making a tour of neighboring cities and covering over 150 miles on a booster trip advertising the Owen Harvest Festival.
75 Years Ago – September 6, 1951
Tuesday morning Mr. Gilbert J. Baker assumed his new duties as station agent at the Soo Line depot in Owen. Mrs. Baker has moved to Owen with him and at present they are trying to locate a home so any good tips of homes available will be appreciated by them.
65 Years Ago – September 7, 1961
Two Owen youths were called into county court last week as a result of testimony given after an automobile accident which occurred north of Owen on County Trunk DD August 27. The driver of the car involved and his companion were two juveniles. The complaints were signed by County Traffic Officer Richard Needham against Jerome Melbinger and Thomas Nelson. Each paid a fine of $75 and costs.
55 Years Ago – September 9, 1971
Three Minneapolis men are being held in Clark County jail in Neillsville for questioning by county authorities in connection with a break-in and burglary at the Withee Drug Store about 3:45 a.m. today.
Mrs. Phyllis Wenzel of Withee wishes to announce the engagement of her daughter, Debra Elvie to Mr. William John Goessl, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Goessl of rural Curtiss.
45 Years Ago – September 3, 1981
The Owen City Council unanimously approved a motion to proceed with the application process for funding a bike trail. The proposed trail would run from where 3rd St. narrows at Mauel’s Dairy to Ryona’s Garage in Withee.
Mr. and Mrs. Thorvald Frost celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary on Sunday, August 23. They hosted about 200 relatives and friends at an open house held in their yard in Withee.
35 Years Ago – September 5, 1991
On Saturday, August 17, the family and friends of former Owenites, Gertie and Clarence Pyatt gathered in Portage to help them celebrate the joyous occasion of their 60th wedding anniversary.
The Owen Library is the recipient of four computer discs which hold all the facts which used to be on micro-film cards. Information which was on 7,500 cards at the library is now available at the touch of a few keys on a computer.
25 Years Ago – September 5, 2001
Dave Stenstrom, Claire Milliren, Dennis Henke, Curt Garrett and Les Himes appeared at the Owen City Council meeting. The Council approved designating land on the west side of the dam at Owen’s Veteran’s Memorial.
15 Years Ago – September 7, 2011
Lorraine Smith celebrated her 94th birthday on August 19 surrounded by her friends, the residents and staff of Clark County Health Care Center.
On Sunday August 28, 2011, siblings and former Withee residents, Joshua Witek, Kristy Witek, and Keri Johnson slipped into their wetsuits and goggles and jumped into choppy Lake Michigan to participate in the Lifetime Chicago Triathlon. They were three of over 5,000 competitors in the World’s Longest Triathlon, and had to complete a .93 mile swim on choppy Lake Michigan, followed by a 24.8 mile bike ride along Lake Shore Drive and a 6.2 mile run along the lakefront.
