95 Years Ago – September 17, 1931
Building operations were begun Thursday of last week, on the remodeling of the Legault Hospital building, and today foundations are completed for the new additions, which will be made. In remodeling the present hospital building, the plans call for 12 rooms on the second floor and three rooms on the first floor.
Two robbers who looted the Big Store at Greenwood of $800 worth of merchandise early Wednesday morning were forced to abandon their car after a running pistol battle with Greenwood officials and take to the woods where they are being sought by a posse under direction of Sheriff William Bradford of Neillsville.
Principal Arthur Muenchow, today is missing his Ford sedan that was stolen from its garage last night. At the garage of E.E. Nielsen tools were taken and it is believed that the same thieves visited both places.
85 Years Ago – September 18, 1941
Alderman Chris Bacon who has charge of city streets, and Street Commissioner Lawrence Clark have had a crew working this week graveling some of the streets in the city which suffered the worse from the breakup this spring. The city is paying 40¢ per yard and is applying the gravel at a thickness of about two and one-half inches.
The city fathers are again confronted with an issue which first demanded their attention in 1934, the construction of an adequate sewage disposal plant to meet the needs of the city. In 1938 when the issue again became acute an application was made for a PWA grant for the construction of such a plant as demanded by the state health department. However, late in the year the grant was refused by the federal government when funds for such work became exhausted. Now, the matter is again before the city council.
75 Years Ago – September 20, 1951
While fishing a week ago Friday afternoon, Alfred Erickson, cashier of the Curtiss State Bank, tied into a musky that proved to be one of the prize catches to be made in the waters of this vicinity thus far this season.
It’ll be a temptation for some hunters come Saturday to work their way across the fields bordering the city and harboring many pheasants. But these same hunters are reminded that the city of Owen has an ordinance forbidding the firing of firearms within the city limits.
65 Years Ago – September 21, 1961
At a public hearing held at the La Tart School on September 12, 1961, the Joint County School Committees of Taylor and Clark counties voted to divide the district. Small portions will go to Owen-Withee and Greenwood and the bulk will go to Loyal. The effective date will be July 1, 1962, so the school will run as is this year.
55 Years Ago – September 23, 1971
Mrs. Rose Olszewski returned home Tuesday of last week from a six-week trip to Poland. She also visited relatives and friends in Chicago before returning home.
45 Years Ago – September 17, 1981
Charles Hicks, podiatrist, has recently joined the Owen-Withee Family Clinic. Dr. Hicks specializes in problems with the foot and ankle. He will see patients at the clinic Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.
It’s grand opening time for the 11th Frame, and new owners Larry and Sue Sholes are doing it up big for the weekend.
35 Years Ago – September 19, 1991
If you don’t do another thing this coming weekend, be sure you travel out to Woodknot Hollow to attend the first annual “Art in the Barn” show. “Art in the Barn” is a collection of custom art work by local artisans and Woodknot Hollow is the farm of Walter and Ester (Kangas) Niedzwiecki.
Fuyumi Hatekeyama and Keiko Fukagawa arrived at the Mr. and Mrs. Orland L. Olson residence at rural Withee on September 1, 1991, for a 28-day visit. Both girls are from Tokyo, Japan.
25 Years Ago – September 19, 2001
Pvt. 2nd Class Clinton D. Simenson, son of Scott and Marion Nelson and Dave and Patricia Simenson, all of Withee, successfully completed Basic Combat Training with Delta Company 2nd Battalion 47th Infantry Division at Fort Benning, Georgia on September 6, 2001.
Original members of the Boom-Town Sno Chasers from Curtiss were presented with plaques at a meeting of the club last Thursday night. They were Floyd Bowen, Paul Stasek, Lila Meske, and Les Bowen.

After seeing the bear once via trail camera near Willard, Kurt Smith of Withee says he “got lucky” and was in the “right place at the right time.” The bear was 387 pounds field dressed, with an estimated live weight of around 450 pounds and measuring 6’8” long from nose to base of tail.
