Another Lunar New Year celebrated at O-W Elementary

Posted

On January 29, Owen-Withee first graders celebrated Lunar New Year by learning how to use chopsticks and making crafts. Mr. Arimura, a friend of first grade teacher Lisa Westaby, gave a demonstration on how to use chopsticks, then the children tried it for themselves with marshmallows before bringing their chopsticks to lunch. “The kids had a wonderful time and loved learning about a holiday that over a billion people celebrate,” said Westaby. “This was the second time Mr. Arimura came to our classroom to teach how to use chopsticks in honor of Lunar New Year.”

The first-grade teachers used this opportunity to teach students about other cultures and according to their teachers the students loved it.

According to the Chinese lunar calendar 2025 is the year of the snake. It began on January 29 this year and kicks off the 16-day Spring Festival. The snake symbolizes wisdom and transformation and focuses on personal growth and change. Westaby stated that the Lunar New Year is celebrated by 1/6 of the world and particularly in Asian countries.
