Technology is great when it works, not so great when it doesn’t. Two weeks in a row now technology has been a hindrance to accomplishing what I need to accomplish.
Last week it was the internet going on while I was working on the newspaper proofreading, so I apologize if I missed anything. I was diligent though, driving around town at 1 a.m. in the wind and the rain trying to find a signal somewhere. Thankfully, the internet at the Owen Library was working so I could at least download what I needed to look at.
This week, it has been email giving us grief while I am trying to get my stuff done for the newspaper. It has refused to load emails on the computer, but will load them on my phone. Sometimes it won’t open an email. And sometimes it just kicks me out. I was able to forward some items from my work email to my personal email using my phone. From there I could download them to the computer as I really had no desire to retype everything.
It is interesting the difference between it being your choice and technology just being difficult. I mostly stayed off of email and Facebook over the weekend, taking a much needed break. I was okay with that. But when email or the internet, or even the computer, for that matter is giving me grief, it really isn’t all that stress reducing.
Sometimes it is only not working for a short period of time. Okay, I can deal with that. Sometimes it is hours and hours of frustration. I have referred to it before as being similar to falling into a black hole. This is especially true when the power goes out. No technology, no TV, no internet. What is one supposed to do with all that extra time? I do like to read but that interferes with getting work done. And if the power is out and it is dark outside, it also makes that difficult to do. Although, I will admit when desperation sets in, I have used a camp lantern to read by. It probably didn’t do much for my eyes, as they don’t give off a lot of light.
Since bad things always happen in threes, I can’t wait to see what the next technology nightmare will be. But once it passes maybe all will be well for awhile.
