Curtiss Corners Quilters put on quite a show

The Curtiss Corners Quilt Club welcomed 153 (registered) guests to their 34th annual quilt show on August 3, 2024. Rows of quilts lined the rooms of the old schoolhouse in Curtiss that day along with other crafts and sewing items for sale and new this year was a competition for youngsters.

Demonstrations for the day included t-shirt quilts by Becky Schmelzer, Teddy Bears and Foster Care Community Service Project, a history of the club by Laverna Marcott, quilt binding by Mavis Wood, slow stitching by Lynn Van Winkle and Sandi Petke and Creative Uses for Binding Tool by Carol Sackman.

Lynn Van Winkle headed up the always delicious lunch served highlighted by chicken salad croissant sandwiches.  The club raffled gift baskets filled with sewing, craft items and more.  Sewing machine cleaning was available at a reasonable price throughout the show as well.

This year’s theme was Teddy Bears & Foster Care which is also the club’s community service project. The plan began June of 2023 to sew quilts for children in foster care within Clark County. The ladies partnered with the Stanley Correctional Institution’s SCOPE program to pair a teddy bear or stuffed animal with each quilt. Each week over 100 men donate their time and talent to craft items such as blankets, afghans, hats, scarves, mittens, stuffed animals and paintings to donate to non-profit organizations. The Curtiss Corners Quilters were happy to offer comfort to foster children through their 28 handmade quilts.

Quilt show attendees were given a ballot and encouraged to vote for their favorite quilts in three divisions which included large quilts, small quilts and other. The results of the show are as follows: large quilt – 1st and Best of Show Cathy Settlemyre, 2nd Lori Neumann, 3rd Mavis Wood, Sandi Petke, Laverna Marcott; small quilt – 1st Lori Neumann, 2nd Donna Reamer, 3rd Mavis Wood; other – 1st Cathy Settlemyre, 2nd Sue Eloranta, 3rd Bev Brandl.

Several of the quilts at the show were created using blocks that the members created each month. Each month a member chose a block to demonstrate for the meeting and the following meeting members would bring them to show. The club made a mystery quilt in 2024 of which instructions were given over several meetings until the quilt was completed. Many of these quilts also were displayed at this show.

Curtiss Corners Quilt Club President Sandi Petke encouraged quilters to get our youth involved in sewing and keep the tradition growing. “Club members and some family members worked hard to put together a nice show,” said Petke. “This year we added back the kid’s corner. Looking forward, it will be good to see this section grow showing how quilting is being passed down to the future generations.”
