95 Years Ago – May 15, 1930
The Commencement exercises of the Owen High School will be held on Friday evening, May 23 at the gymnasium. There are 19 members of the graduating class this year.
Mrs. Elmer Martinson of Withee broke her right leg at the ankle, bruised her knee and suffered cuts about the face last Friday when she fell from a horse near the Claviter filling station.
85 Years Ago – May 16, 1940
Henry Wollum, owner of the Owen Sunshine Canneries, Inc., which was recently reorganized, last night stated at the meeting of the Owen Commercial Club that his company will can soybeans this summer as an experiment.
Ray Conzemius, owner of Ray’s 5¢ to $1 store, left Saturday of last week for the Twin Cities, where he visited with friends and relatives, and on Tuesday, May 14, at Hastings, MN, was united in marriage at the home of his parents, to Miss Kathryn Rotty, also of Hastings.
A new concern, the Clark County Dairy Sales Cooperative Association, to be headed by Otto Borgen, will open its office in the basement of the Woodland Hotel within the week.
75 Years Ago – May 18, 1950
E.C. “Jack” Olds, of the B.&O. Garage, Owen handed over the keys to a new Chevrolet car, in which the seniors of the Withee high school will receive their driving instructions, to their principal, Myron Fritsch.
65 Years Ago – May 19, 1960
Gene Lavin was the first youngster to claim a bicycle as the result of selling 16 new subscriptions to The Owen Enterprise.
A Joint County School Committee comprised of Clark and Taylor counties held a hearing at the Curtiss Elementary School on Thursday evening, May 12. The hearing was held to act on a petition which asked for the detachment of most of the Town of Hoard and a small section of the village of Curtiss from the Curtiss School District and the attachment of the same to the Owen-Withee School District. Following a conference the Joint School Committee voted unanimously to deny the petition. At the same time a new petition was drawn up calling for the dissolution of the Curtiss School District and a division of the territory involved between the Owen-Withee and Abbotsford School Districts, with the portion going to Owen being considerably smaller than called for in the first petition.
55 Years Ago – May 14, 1970
The Commercial Credit Corporation wishes to announce the promotion of Mr. Larry T. Klabon, La Crosse, to Loan Manager of the La Crosse office. Mr. Klabon is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Klabon, Withee.
Sacred Heart Church of Elmwood was the setting Saturday, April 18 for the marriage of Mary Ellen Lechner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Lechner, Elmwood and Ronald Allen Kallio. Parents of the bridegroom are Mr. and Mrs. Toivo Kallio, route 2, Owen.
45 Years Ago – May 13, 1980
Representatives of the Owen and Withee business community appeared before the O-W school board on Monday evening, May 12, 1980 during their regular meeting, with the request that the school district “spend more money for school purchases in the district.”
The Curtiss Village Board directed the village attorney to draft an ordinance saying that mobile homes inside village limits must be in a mobile home park during their meeting on Tuesday evening May 6, 1980.
35 Years Ago – May 17, 1990
Northwest Petroleum will be installing new underground piping and pumps at Withee Oil Company. There will be new pumps, a canopy and underground tanks to keep up with current EPA regulations. Slobodnik Construction is doing the excavating and Braun Construction the concrete work.
Mr. and Mrs. Brad Colby of Owen announce the engagement of their daughter Stacey to Curtis Graski, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Graski of Rte. 1, Withee. The wedding date is set for June 29, 1991.
25 Years Ago – May 17, 2000
Father Al Jakubowski, pastor of Holy Rosary Catholic Church of Owen and St. Bernard’s Catholic Church of Abbotsford, will observe 25 years in the priesthood on May 25.
The State Bank of Withee and the Community Insurance Agency welcomes Brian Lehman, a Certified Insurance Counselor, to their staff as an agent to the Insurance Agency.
15 Years Ago – May 19, 2010
The Village of Withee Board met at their new meeting room in the former Community Insurance building. The first order of business became a heated topic as the board gave their feelings about the Indianhead Housing Units. Trustees Hiipakka and Frankiewicz, who live near the apartment complex, voiced their opinions clearly that something should be done about the fact that Indianhead is breaking the zoning ordinance.
A son, Sawyer William-Donald Halida, was born to Jason and Nicole Halida, Withee, on May 3, 2010. The baby weighed 10 lbs. 15 oz., and measured 21 inches long.
