95 Years Ago – August 8, 1929
Fred Warns Jr., who has conducted the general store at Clark for the past year or more, sold the business on Friday of last week to A.M. Zenzel of Owen, who took possession that day. Mr. Zenzel, for some time past, has been manager of the Crane elevator in this city, and is well and favorably known to the people of Clark. He is making improvements there and will carry a complete line of general merchandise, flour, feeds, etc.
The Lane Bowler Co. of Milwaukee, who have had a contract with the city for the drilling of a number of wells for the city’s supply of water, last week broke their contract and moved their equipment from this city to some place in Canada, where they have another contract for wells. During the year tests were made, and it was found that the supply was not building up, and the drillers were forced to return here again and start drilling. Their last stay here has been for more than a year, and they have tried every place where they thought that water could be found and last week efforts to get the supply of water guaranteed in their contract was given up.

The yard lighting of Sully’s Curve Inn was recently improved better illuminating the front and side of the building and making it more ideal for parking cars.
75 Years Ago – August 11, 1949
One hundred and one years after gold was found at Sutter’s Creek and 100 years after the gold rush of 1849, it has been revealed that the forty-niners did not get all of the gold hidden in California hills. L.A. Philbrick of Oakdale and J.P. Staples of Valley Home, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Staples, Greenwood, have found gold east of Oakdale.
65 Years Ago – August 6, 1959
Thirteen calves perished in a fire of undetermined origin, which destroyed a large L-shaped barn on the farm of John Light, 1½ miles northwest of Dorchester, about 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
Monday, August 10, at 7:30 p.m. the Abbotsford National Guard Unit will give a free artillery demonstration at the Abbotsford ball park. The primary purpose of this show will be to acquaint the public with the duties and responsibilities of an Artillery Firing Battery.
55 Years Ago – August 7, 1969
Tauno Ranta, Owen, a native of Finland who had spent 10 of the past 13 years at the North and South Poles, flew from Minneapolis airport Wednesday, July 30, for Winnipeg, Canada. At Winnipeg, he and four university students flew to “Alert” within 180 miles of the North Pole, where Ranta will be in charge of construction and maintenance for six weeks.
Donald A. Kovala, math instructor in the Owen-Withee school system, received his master of arts degree from Northern Michigan University at Marquette, Michigan, during commencement exercises held on the 2nd of August.
45 Years Ago – August 8, 1979
On Friday night, August 3, 1979, Kathy Zukowski was crowned the first “Miss Owen” for the Owen Junior Fair during an annual Coronation Ball held at the Owen gym.
On Wednesday, August 1, Dr. G.R. Scharer celebrated his 30th anniversary of his chiropractic practice in Owen. In honor of the occasion, Alice Burhop, his first patient on August 1, 1949 was called in for an appointment, and when she arrived, Dr. Scharer presented her with a vase of 30 roses, in red, white and pink.
Armond Miller, chairman of the Town of Hixon, announced today that he had received word from Joe Sweda, vice chairman of the State Transportation Commission Madison, that the commission on its own motion, under the provisions of Sec. 195.28 Wis. Statutes, directed that an investigation be made to determine whether existing protective devices are adequate at the grade crossing of the Soo Line Railroad tracks on County T, in the Town of Hixon.

Nicole Peterson was the winner of Terk, the giant stuffed gorilla from the movie Tarzan. The drawing concluded Kids Fest at the O-W IGA.
Born to Brandi Stumpner and Travis Arndt of Withee, a daughter, Erica Marie Arndt, on July 25, 1999, weighing 8 pounds, 2 ounces and 20½ inches long.
15 Years Ago – August 12, 2009
The staff and directors of Pioneer Bank cut the ribbon on August 3 at their new branch near Withee, at N14570 County Road O.
Clark County Emergency Management, along with Emergency Management personnel from Jackson, Taylor, and Marathon counties are hosting a multi-county functional exercise in and around the city of Owen, and the towns of Hoard and Hixon on August 29 from 8 a.m. to 12 noon. The purpose of the exercise is to afford interaction with first responders from other jurisdictions.
