95 Years Ago – August 15, 1929

The F.F. Mengel Construction Co., who have the contract for completing the gap between the paving projects in the city, began work in earnest last week, and now have a large crew of men at work preparing the road for the pouring of concrete, which will be started Friday.

85 Years Ago – August 17, 1939

Residents of the second and nearby third ward were awakened from their sleep around 7:30 Wednesday morning by a new unusually loud sound of rapid hammering. Upon investigation it was revealed that a crew of eight workmen were swarming over the upper portion of the water tower some 120 feet above ground with electric scrapers and cleaners removing the old paint from the water tower.

75 Years Ago – August 18, 1949

City Attorney, R.F. Gaffney, is now working with Chippewa County officials in their effort to substantiate his story and break down the alibi of three men ranging from 44 to 17 years of age, who according to Gaffney had him on a three and one half hour ride late Sunday afternoon and evening. The men robbed him of about two dollars in currency, at the point of a gun, threw him into a ditch threatening to kill him before one of them decided he may have more currency on him and then forced him back into their car.

65 Years Ago – August 13, 1959

Caroline Teclaw, town of Longwood, who had sold her tavern and was having a “going away party” was fined $10 and costs of $9.95 by Judge Lowell D. Schoengarth in county court here Tuesday on charge of selling liquor after legal hours.

55 Years Ago – August 14, 1969

Allan Krahn, son of Mrs. Alice Krahn and the late Erwin Krahn, will deliver his first sermon in his home congregation this weekend at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Withee.

A rural Withee youth is being held under guard in St. Joseph’s Hospital where he is being treated for injuries sustained in a crash while he was allegedly fleeing in a stolen car from Stanley police officers.

45 Years Ago – August 15, 1979

Betty Amacher has opened her own beauty salon, “Betty’s Beauty Salon”, having taken over the former Cut and Kurl shop owned and operated by Ruth Wilson.

After more than two solid years of discussion, debate, and often argument, a motion was made, and the members of the O-W school board brought the motion to a vote to rescind their June motion to have an all-day alternate kindergarten program in the Owen-Withee district starting this fall. Upon a voice vote, the motion to rescind was defeated by a vote of 2 in favor and 4 against. And with the defeat of the motion, Terry Thompson, board president announced that the new kindergarten program will proceed as planned, and the change will be instituted after approximately five weeks into the school term.

Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Mueller of Withee gave their daughter, Sandra Kay, in marriage to Timothy E. Hartley of Grafton, during a 4:30 p.m. ceremony July 3 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Withee.

Mr. and Mrs. John Isaacs of Withee announce the engagement of their daughter, Cindy to Rev. Warren Neilsen, son of Rev. and Mrs. Clayton Neilsen of Omaha, NE (formerly of Withee). An October 13 wedding in Withee is planned.

35 Years Ago – August 17, 1989

Workmen were erecting the steel framework of the new addition on the Owen-Withee Fire Association building both last week and this week. The addition will afford the firemen more room for their overcrowded storage area for the fire trucks, equipment and ambulance.

The roofing and sidewalks are being enclosed as the new Owen Library and meeting room facility takes shape. The library will have room for public hearings and room for election booth facilities.

25 Years Ago – August 18, 1999

As students come in for their first day of school on Thursday, August 19, Mr. David Novy will experience that same angst as he starts his first day as elementary principal.

15 Years Ago – August 19, 2009

Through his new business, Shelton Electric, Bernie Shelton hopes to perform quality, up-to-code electrical work for the Owen-Withee area and beyond.

On August 24, 1984, the first tenants made their home at the renovated Maple Manor Apartments at 219 E. Third Street in Owen. The building has a long history of serving the citizens of the Owen-Withee area. In its infancy, the building was a private residence owned by W.G. Royer. Shortly after, it became Owen’s first and only hospital. The city’s doctor, G.A. LeGault, purchased the property in 1929 from Mrs. J. Andrews, a daughter of Mr. Royer.
