95 Years Ago – October 3, 1929

The new bridge across Black River four miles west of the city, was opened to travel on Friday morning of last week.

The change in the train schedule of the Soo Line is causing some inconvenience to its patrons at Withee. Train No. 2, which formerly arrived at this station at 1:00 p.m., does not stop, but is now running as a limited. Train No. 6 is now the only eastbound passenger train making a stop, and this arrives at 11:11 a.m. Train No. 1, also is limited and makes no stop at this station. Train No. 5, arriving here in the evening, arrives somewhat later, its time now being 7:24.

85 Years Ago – October 5, 1939

Patrick T. O’Connor, salesman of Eau Claire was arrested Tuesday evening by County Highway Officer W.R. Haire after his car finally came to a stop after having traveled over the yard and finally crashing into the VanErt service station three and one half miles west of Thorp, moving the building three feet off its foundation.

75 Years Ago – October 6, 1949

Leonard Hamm and Paul Stasek co-owners of the Owen Theatre for the past three years completed a business transaction late Tuesday night whereby the ownership of the business has been transferred to Mr. Virgil Callahan and his brother.

65 Years Ago – October 1, 1959

The condition of Mrs. Elmer Bakken, route 2, Owen, was reported as being good yesterday at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield, where she is being treated after an attempted suicided. Mrs. Bakken, about 48 years of age and the mother of 13 children, five of whom are at home, apparently had been despondent for some time.

Yesterday afternoon a business deal was completed whereby the lease on the Standard Service Station at Withee was transferred. For the past two years it has been operated by Richard Nielsen and his son, John. The business is now under the management of John W. Knittle.

55 Years Ago – Oct 2, 1969

Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Longwood, has completed plans for the celebration of its 75th anniversary, October 5, 1969. A history has been compiled and made into a book which will be on sale.

Plans for the 104,000 acre watershed, flood control and recreational program in northern Clark County centering around the city of Owen are in the making and the program is expected to be started and completed in 1970. The program calls for a dam to develop a lake, canals, and recreational facilities.

45 Years Ago – October 3, 1979

The decline in enrollment in the Owen-Withee School District for the 1979-80 school year will result in a loss of almost $60,000 in state aids. State aids in the 1978-79 school term were based on an enrollment total of 892 students, This term, 1979-80, state aids to the O-W district will be based on 835 students.

Malin Konieczny was injured last Friday, September 28, when he was run over by a wagon while at work at Teledyne. He was attempting to unhook the sawdust wagon, at about 9 p.m., when the tractor suddenly pulled out, and he was run over by the wagon. He suffered a broken jaw, a severed left ear, and his right arm was broken in seven places from the elbow to the shoulder.

35 Years Ago – October 5, 1989

On September 24, during the Style Show sponsored by the Withee Library, Lion Dennis Lulloff, president of the Withee Lions, presented the Withee Library with a check for $500, donated by the Withee Lions for the purchase of new library books.

25 Years Ago – October 6, 1999

The State Bank of Withee, almost as old as the Village of Withee, has been the backbone of this community and the farm area surrounding it since its incorporation on October 15, 1902. In that year the Village of Withee, incorporated the year before, was a community of about 304 people. The bank building recently demolished was constructed in 1924 and has served its purpose well. The decision behind the demolition of the old State Bank of Withee bank building was primarily an economic one. The Board’s decision came about after extensive attempts to figure out a way to utilize the building for other uses.

Ruth Karlsen, a cousin of Bernard Auberg, Withee, and Laura Auberg Paulsen of Phoenix AZ, together with her nephews Hans and Tore Norum of Rade, Norway, arrived here September 24.

15 Years Ago – October 7, 2009

The former Harley and Agnes Herington house on Highway X, Owen, was moved out on Thursday morning to its new setting and to its new owners Todd and Ann Graski. The route of least resistance followed Highway X east to County Road DD, then crossing 29 to Oak Road and onto 73 to the Graski residence at Resewood Avenue, Withee.
