Frank Crye has rented a room in the Elliot building and will open a new paint and wallpaper shop.

The new Idle Hour Theatre building is nearing completion. Harry Probst installed the heating plant this week.

95 Years Ago – October 17, 1929

Today the Golden Crust Bakery goes under new management. Henry V. Anderson, who has successfully managed it for the past several years, gives over his place to M.M. Keefe.

Friday of last week, work of installing new display shelves in the City Meat Market was begun and on the following day the job was completed. The new shelves are a patented product and are something new to display fixtures.

85 Years Ago – October 19, 1939

The Owen Box and Crating Company has rented their factory for a limited period to L.W. Cattanach, in trust, and it will be operated by him as such.

Little Jane Piper, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Piper, is confined to the LeGault Hospital where she is being treated for serious injuries sustained yesterday afternoon when the team of horses hitched to a steel wheeled wagon suddenly ran away, knocking Little Jane, who was standing beside the team, under the wheels of the wagon. Medical examination at the hospital revealed that the child is suffering from a broken arm and leg, internal injuries and numerous cuts and bruises about the face.

75 Years Ago – October 20, 1949

A special church ceremony commemorating the observance of the 50th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Niemi, route 1, Owen, was held at the Bethany Lutheran Church, Owen at 1:30 Saturday afternoon.

65 Years Ago – October 15, 1959

Plans are being formulated by the Owen Kiwanis Club for an adequate winter-long ice skating rink in the city this forthcoming winter. Mayor Melbinger said Monday night at the Kiwanis meeting that the city and fire department would cooperate as far as keeping the rink cleared of snow and flooding it is concerned.

55 Years Ago – October 16, 1969

Members of the Owen Fire Department are busy this week, and have been for some time past in fact, readying their new fire hall for a public showing. Plans are to receive the public Saturday, October 25, when a program will be held followed by entertainment. Their equipment is now housed in a new 40x102 foot building located on Country Trunk X in the Third Ward.

45 Years Ago – October 17, 1979

Although there was much concern among O-W School District residents who attended the informational meeting held last Wednesday evening, October 10 in the Withee Elementary gym, whether the new elementary school building would be built separate from or connected to the present high school building, after much discussion, all except three persons out of the group voted in a poll vote to build the new facility connected to the existing high school building.

There hasn’t ever been anything like it before in Owen, and perhaps there will never be anything like it again. These words sum up and say it all about the all new 11th Frame Bowling Alley and Lounge, Owen-Withee’s all new Recreational Center.

Ron Gehrke has resigned his position as fire chief of the Owen-Withee Fire Department, and during the regular monthly meeting of the Owen Common Council on Tuesday evening, October 9, 1979, his letter of resignation was presented by the mayor and accepted by the council.

35 Years Ago – October 19, 1989

The kindergarten boys and girls lined up in front of the big fire truck following a demonstration for Fire Prevention Week. Each child who wished could hold the fire hose, see the ambulance and the fire station.

John Stone, Fire Control Manager of the DNR, stationed near Fairchild gave a lesson on forest fires and fire safety when the fifth graders at O-W Elementary visited the school forest at Greenwood on their field trip recently.

25 Years Ago – October 20, 1999

Mayor Allen Gajewsky showed the aerial photograph of Owen, taken during the city’s Jr. Fair weekend. This very attractive picture will hang in Owen’s City Hall as a companion photo to a 1907 picture of the city in its lumbering era. The newest photo was taken for the upcoming 75th anniversary of the city, to begin the celebration in April of 2000.

15 Years Ago – October 21, 2009

Claire Milliren, Owen, WWII veteran was honored with approximately 100 fellow veterans on the Freedom Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. Claire served in the Air Force, flying with the 8th Air Force out of England. Claire flew 30 missions over Germany.
