95 Years Ago – November 28, 1929
C.E. Bollum, who less than three weeks ago purchased the Withee Meat Market from E.E. Capes has sold the business to Harry Thorson, the deal being completed on Tuesday, and Mr. Thorson taking possession of the business Wednesday morning.
85 Years Ago – November 30, 1939
Due to failing health of himself and his wife, R.M. Griffith this week sold his business which he has operated and owned in this city for the past 15 years. The successor to Mr. Griffith will continue to operate the store as a Red & White store.
75 Years Ago – December 1, 1949
Floyd Thorne, a mechanic at Louis Burhop’s Service Station, Owen, said this morning that the fire that started in the basement of the building was caused by a spark from his welding torch. The spark dropped through a drain hole in the floor into the basement, starting an oil fire that was difficult to combat. Damage was confined to the basement.
Saturday, December 3 is the date of the “grand opening” of Ray Wagner’s new feed mill located just east of the Soo Line Depot.
Bernard Melman, doctor of optometry, will from Monday of next week on have office hours in the City of Owen. His office will be located downstairs in the Woodland Hotel. He is bringing this additional professional service to this community one day a week, every Monday.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Knaack, Sr., Owen, announce the engagement of their daughter, Imogene Ann, to Mr. Eugene Lester Mertens, son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Mertens, Withee. The date of their marriage has been set for January 14.
65 Years Ago – November 26, 1959
Army M/Sgt. John F. Bednarczyk, son of John F. Bednarczyk, route 1, Lublin, recently was awarded the Good Conduct Medal while serving with the 2nd Armored Division at Fort Hood, TX.
Woodrow Wall, Withee, is a member of the freshman basketball squad at the Wisconsin State College, La Crosse.
55 Years Ago – November 27, 1969
The Rev. Arthur F. Hellert, Grand Forks, ND, will be installed as pastor of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Withee, and Trinity Lutheran Church, Greenwood, at 8 p.m. Sunday, November 30, 1969.
All of the personnel of the Clark County Hospital were given instructions in the art of self-defense last week when former Owen police chief Adolph Haavisto conducted classes both in the forenoon and afternoon for three days.
45 Years Ago – November 29, 1979
Vandalism to Mertens Implement in Withee was reported to the police at approximately 12:45 a.m. Saturday morning, November 24 by the owner. According to the report, the owner’s son said that he witnessed two kids, a boy and a girl, taking a piece of wood, or log from the pile in front of the Implement store, each grabbing an end, and then throwing the log through a plate glass window, putting a hole in the window.
35 Years Ago – November 30, 1989
A surprise Silver Anniversary party was held in honor of Robert and Karen Bakke on October 28 at Dave’s Steak House, Owen. Robert and Karen were married October 10, 1964 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Curtiss.
25 Years Ago – December 1, 1999
The area Mennonite/Amish community is erecting a building on County Hwy O to house a Produce Auction. The foundation is down and it is ready to set posts.
December will be a month of celebrations at Withee United Methodist Church. First, of course, we are celebrating the Advent Season and the birth of our blessed Lord Jesus Christ. We are also beginning a year-long celebration of the 85th Anniversary of Methodism in Withee.
Dairyland Animal Clinic started some renovations a couple of years ago, with a facelift to the office and reception area. A new X-ray machine was installed last summer, with accompanying fluoroscopy, and ultrasound was added last week, as was the attractive red and white Dairyland sign.
15 Years Ago – December 2, 2009
Jim Boylan, Appleton, formerly of Longwood, stopped in the O-W Enterprise office on Monday. He reported that Jim Turenne, contractor, left a flat bed trailer at the Boylan home and they found a bullet hole in the heavy metal steel front shield of the trailer. Upon further examination they found that the ricocheting bullet had dented a new storage shed. Boylan, needless to say, is upset. He owns 70-75 acres of wooded land and likes to come up here and relax.
