95 Years Ago – June 25, 1931
Rolland Haire, Clark County motorcycle policeman, met with an accident Monday evening on the highway four miles east of Owen, when a dog belonging to Emil Buss dashed across the road, striking the motorcycle and throwing Policeman Haire from the machine, whereby he received injuries about his knee and his arm. The motorcycle was damaged slightly and the dog was injured so badly that Officer Haire shot and killed him, in order to remove him from the motorcycle.
85 Years Ago – June 26, 1941
Repeating marriage vows before Rev. George E. Griffiths of Iron River, Michigan, Miss Olive Warden, daughter of Mrs. Martha Warden of Stanley, and Bertel Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Miller of Withee, were united in marriage in a service at three o’clock Tuesday afternoon, June 24, in the First Presbyterian Church at Stanley.
Covers were laid for 40 persons including the family, friends and relatives of Mr. and Mrs. N.C. Lehnen at the Woodland Hotel Sunday, June 22, at which time Mr. and Mrs. Lehnen were honored on their 25th wedding anniversary.
75 Years Ago – June 28, 1951
Sam Pocus, 55, suffered a gash over his right eye, a broken right arm, just below the shoulder, three fractured ribs and other bruises in an accident that occurred just minutes before time to wind up his day shift Monday afternoon at the Master Package Corporation where he is employed.
Meeting at the Curtiss Village Hall a majority of the business places in Curtiss decided to unite themselves. They voted in favor of a businessmen’s club and decided that necessary and formal organizational steps would be taken at their next meeting.
65 Years Ago – June 29, 1961
Fill dirt has been hauled in and levelled prior to the pouring of the slab on which the new club house at the Meadowview Country Club will rest.
Production at the Frederick Post Mfg. Corporation, Owen, will come to a standstill tomorrow night with the close of the workday for a one week period. It has long been the policy of the firm to cease production during the Fourth of July week when maintenance work is done.
Carrying a bouquet of white roses centered by a large purple orchid Miss Patricia Ann Malinowski became the bride of Arthur James Albert in a ceremony performed at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, June 17 at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Owen.
55 Years Ago – July 1, 1971
While banking operations are back to normal at the Owen office of the Owen-Curtiss State Bank behind the scene activities are in continuing pursuit of leads and clues that hopefully will eventually lead to the arrest of the robbers who hit the bank last Wednesday night and/or early Thursday morning for a take of $46,000.
Miss Linda M. Jalling and David Renderman were united in marriage in a 2:00 p.m. ceremony Saturday, June 26 at the Little Brown Church in the Vale, Nashua, Iowa.
45 Years Ago – June 25, 1981
The Western Wisconsin Health Systems Agency Review Committee will meet at the Thorpedo Restaurant this Thursday, June 25 to discuss the $8.75 million renovation and building program proposed for the Clark County Health Care Center in Owen. The major renovation project will reduce the number of nursing home beds from 306 to 253, close the 10-bed acute psychiatric unit, and initiate a 22-bed mentally ill hospital unit.
Justin Olszewski, Withee, son of Louise and Frank Olszewski, is one of five winners in the regional poster contest sponsored by the Wisconsin Valley Library Service, Wausau. Justin is 9 years old and his poster illustrates the 1981 Children’s Book Week theme “Any Time, Any Place, Any Book.”
35 Years Ago – June 27, 1991
Curbside collection of recyclables will begin in Withee on Tuesday, July 2, 1991. Collection will be made every other week thereafter. Recycling containers have already been delivered.
Arthur and Charlotte Stewart, Withee, celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on June 16, 1991 at the Meadowview Country Club in Owen. The party was hosted by their children.
25 Years Ago – June 27, 2001
Returning June 9 from a fishing trip near Upsala, Ontario, Canada were Jim Maurina, Bill Maurina, Ralph Silwa, Gaylord Kaduce, John Laakso and Arne Laakso. They report beautiful sunny weather the whole week. Gaylord caught a 20” walleye and John a 26” walleye.

Owen Police Chief Randall Poirier of Withee, who is a member of American Legion Post 547, has elected to be a candidate for the position of Sgt-at-Arms for the Wisconsin American Legion at the state level.
