ELLSWORTH — Whether you have always wanted to try watercolor painting or are an experienced painter looking to build your skills, the Ellsworth Public Library invites you to explore the possibilities of watercolor during a new five-week painting series with award-winning watercolor artist John Grancorvitz.
The five-week watercolor workshop begins Thursday, Oct. 8, and continues each Thursday through Nov, 5, from 10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. The class is designed for beginner to intermediate painters and welcomes anyone interested in learning, practicing, or expanding their watercolor skills.
Through demonstrations, instruction, and hands-on painting, participants will explore the fundamentals of watercolor, including how water and pigment interact on paper, brush techniques, color mixing, creating textures, values, basic drawing skills, and composition. Each session will provide an opportunity to learn new techniques and put them into practice.
No previous watercolor experience is necessary. Those who already paint are also encouraged to participate and use the series to strengthen their existing skills and explore new techniques.
The workshop is free, but preregistration is required as space is limited due to the size of the classroom. Participants are encouraged to bring their own watercolor supplies. A materials list will be provided upon registration. The library can provide supplies for participants who are unable to obtain the items on the list; please let the library know in advance.
John Grancorvitz has been passionate about drawing and painting since childhood. His early pencil drawings eventually led to scratchboard etchings and, in the mid-1990s, to watercolor painting, which remains his primary focus today. A self-taught watercolorist, John draws inspiration from his love of the outdoors, incorporating observations from bike rides, hiking trips, and everyday life into his work.
Grancorvitz paints a diverse range of subjects, including landscapes, pet and people portraits, and cityscapes, and conducts watercolor workshops for participants of all skill levels.
An award-winning artist, John's work has been featured at venues including the Community Arts Base Gallery in River Falls and the Phipps Center for the Arts in Hudson. He is a member of the American Watercolor Society and a signature member of the NorthStar Watermedia Society.
Come ready to learn, experiment, and get creative. Dress for painting and be prepared to get a little messy!
