The Clark County Board of Supervisors met on April 16 to swear in new board members who were elected to their seats during the April 2 election and to choose new officers and committee members. In the board’s first vote, Tom Wilcox was elected to the position of county board chairperson. He was voted in over Joe Waichulis Jr. 16 to 11. For the position of county board vice chair, Chuck Rueth was voted in over Ken Gerhardt in a 15 to 12 vote.

After the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) informed the Granton Village Board that the expenses for running the village’s wastewater department outweigh its income, the board voted to increase the wastewater volume charge by more than a dollar to cover the deficit.

The Colby school board enacted several measures that will increase compensation for existing and incoming district staff at their most recent board meeting. Annual salary increases for all staff, additional compensation for continued education and adjustments to the base teaching salary and hiring bonus, as well as adding a hiring bonus for support staff, were all decisions the board made in hopes of being competitive with other area schools in both retaining staff and attracting new employees.

Varsity baseball will be returning to the School District of Thorp next year. However, that varsity team will not be comprised solely of student-athletes from Thorp High School. With continued low numbers projected next spring, Thorp’s Board of Education approved a two-year co-op with the Owen-Withee School District on Wednesday, April 17.

Thorp American Legion Auxiliary Unit 118 member Diane Weggen was among volunteers receiving recognition on Friday, April 19, at the Chippewa Veterans Home for their work this past year.

A Stanley woman served City of Stanley officials with a small claims lawsuit at the Stanley City Council meeting on Monday, April 15. Ruby Ann Birt, 206 E. 2nd Ave., alleges she’s been discriminated against and harassed by the city and is seeking $10,000.

Emotions ran high as the Town of Thorp board met in special meeting on April 16 to decide on a construction contractor for the future town hall and shop scheduled to begin construction in May. As the evening continued and the annual town meeting was drawing to a close, (Chairman Jerry) Jacks announced to the board and meeting attendees that this would be his last meeting as chairman for the Town of Thorp. Jacks who held the position of chairman for one year commented that his decision to resign was due to the stress from the planning for the new construction project, the indecisiveness of the board, and a health scare a few months back.
