The Owen family monument at Riverside Cemetery that has lain flat on the ground for more than a year and a half is standing once again thanks to Friends of the Old School.
The Celtic cross was discovered lying in leaves on the ground in May 2023 by a FOSI member visiting her own family graves. It laid there until September of this year when FOSI funded a new cement base and raising of the heavy limestone cross. The monument is over five feet tall.
The Riverside Cemetery Association had stated through several of its members that it was not responsible for replacing the Owen monument.
The monument marks the graves of A.R. Owen, his wife Florence, and daughter Katherine, who died in childhood.
Marshfield Monument Company completed the restoration when weather permitted. The Celtic cross itself had not been damaged, apparently falling into winter snow.
The Owen family was instrumental in establishing the cemetery in the early 1900s.
“It would be sad during Owen’s centennial year if someone had not stepped up to raise the family monument,” a FOSI member said.
