Owen Planning Committee has new site recommendation for possible Owen Fire Station

The Owen Planning Committee met on Tuesday, August 19 to discuss a location for the possible new Owen Fire Station and a requested variance on Northwest Street.
A map was found with a road and lots laid out for the Eastside Commercial Park. The map shows five lots, a road, and a stormwater detention pond. This map shows the road coming in from the current driveway, turning west, and then north to follow the west edge of the city’s property. It is believed the road can avoid the wetland area so the lots to the north could be accessed. This would allow the city to search for water on the north end and create a loop for water to the Commercial Park. The committee’s suggestion was to offer Lot #3 to the fire district, with the potential to add Lot #2, if more space was needed. The fire district could also put their dry hydrant in the stormwater detention pond. The fire district was looking for 10 acres. Lot #3 would give them just over six acres of usable space as part of the area is wetland. The committee would like the city’s engineers to come up with a price for the road. The committee will recommend to the council that they offer Lot #3 to the fire district and the use of the stormwater detention pond. There was no decision on a price or whether it would be a land swap for the current building. The fire district is currently working on getting appraisals done and the city needs to get a good estimate on the cost of the road. Committee chair Ray Kilty felt they don’t need to make a profit on the deal, but the city at least needs to break even.
In light of these new developments, the joint meeting between the council and the fire district has been cancelled for now as they wait for appraisals and road costs.
The owner of the property at 783 Northwest Street asked for a variance to add on to his garage. The property is 15 acres in size. The owner was told he couldn’t build another garage as he already has too many accessory buildings on the lot, so he asked to add 20 feet onto his current garage. The committee recommended granting the variance and sending it to zoning for approval.
