The 2nd grade students of Owen-Withee Elementary were proud to talk about their 3D plant models that are on display in the O-WES library. Second grade teacher Lisa Westaby explained that the students learned about plant interdependence and habitats through several weeks of groups activities, research, writing and creating 3D plant models.
Mrs. Westaby’s class learned that plants need sunlight, soil, carbon dioxide and water to survive and they learned about different habitats. They could choose to research either Venus Fly Traps, Pumpkins, Apple Trees, Maple Trees or Cacti and their habitats.
The kids were eager to offer up interesting facts about their plants. Emily Friedenfels explained that if you stick your finger in the mouth of a Venus Fly Trap it will die because they need to eat whatever comes inside to survive. The Venus Fly Trap lives in an area of the Carolinas that does not have enough nutrients in the soil, so they get nutrients from the bugs that are trapped inside.
“They did a great job,” said Mrs. Westaby of the students. “I’m very proud of them.”
