Owen-Withee first graders visit the Owen Public Library

Owen-Withee’s first-grade classes visited the Owen Public Library with their teachers on Friday, May 9, to learn about the upcoming summer program offerings. Approximately 30 children, including a few younger siblings, were divided into groups that rotated between stations where they colored, listened to stories, made a snack, drew with sidewalk chalk, and more. Several parents came as well.
The Owen Public Library Summer Challenge begins on June 1. This year’s theme is Color Your World. The library will offer a reading challenge for children that asks them to read for 15 minutes each day for eight weeks over the summer to win a prize. Also available will be “take and make” art kits for kids. The kits will be based on projects from “This Book Will Make You an Artist” by Ruth Millington. Library staff will be at the Farmer’s Market on Saturdays, 9 a.m.-12 p.m., June 14, 21, 28, and July 12, 19 & 26 to hand out project kits. We’ll have a new one each week.
Teens and Adults don’t need to feel left out. The library has reading and art challenges for them, too. Participants in the reading challenge read books from our library and then write a brief review. Each review is an entry for a drawing to win a $50 Barnes & Noble card. Participants receive other small prizes as well. Those who sign up for the art challenge will receive a BINGO card. There’s an art challenge in each space. Choose any five challenges to complete the program. Everyone who finishes will be entered in a drawing for a $50 Michaels card.
As part of the summer program, the library will also sponsor the following events:
• June 14, 11:00 a.m. at the Farmer’s Market - Pat Eloranta presents Straw Bale Gardening
•June 21, 11:00 a.m. at the Farmer’s Market - Storyteller Tracy Chipman presents A Rainbow of Stories. Fun for the whole family
• July 19, 1-3:00 p.m. at the library - Come and visit with local authors Mike McCabe (Miracle Along County Q) and Jodie Swanson (Another Day). Books will be available for purchase. This event is part of Owen’s Centennial Celebration.
Summer programs end on July 28. On August 4-8, the library will display the art made by art challenge participants. If you have questions, please contact the library at 715-229-2939.
