Three dozen children and teens stand shoulder to shoulder at the ten-meter line. The youngest are jittery fourth graders, but the ages vary all the way up to seasoned high school seniors. Two archers per target, all waiting for the starting whistle, their bows rest on their toes as the gym falls silent. The whistle chirps, and they all ready their arrows and raise their bows, eyes trained on the yellow 10-point circle ten meters away. Spectators hold their breath as the gym fills with the sporadic thunks of arrows hitting the targets as the archers carefully spend their five arrows, trying to earn the ever-elusive perfect 50.
