Heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson had a famous quote, “Everyone has a plan until they get hit in the mouth!” The Blackhawk football team was hit in the mouth a week ago last Friday night but responded as winners do with a resounding 46-16 win over the Prairie Farm Panthers.
The Hawks won the toss and chose to take the football to get their offense on the field first and set the tempo for the game. That they did, with a 10-play drive capped off with an eight-yard boot pass from Isaiah Pyrchalla to Winston Poehler in the back of the endzone for the score. Talon Mueller added the two-point conversion to put the Hawks up 8-0. That lead was short lived however when the Panthers quarterback made an outstanding pitch just as he was being tackled to his running back who went 80 yards for the score. Two-point conversion was good to knot the score at eight apiece. After a nice kick-off return by Winston Poehler out to the 44-yard line, the Hawks needed only one play, a 56-yard sweep by Clay Mueller down the right sideline to put the Hawks back in front 16-8 after the two-point conversion by Mueller.
The Blackhawk defense settled in and came up with a big fourth down stop on their own 45-yard line. From there, the Hawks pounded out a 13 play, 55-yard drive, mixing the inside and outside running of Mueller and Mueller. Talon tacked on the score with an eight yard off tackle play to put the Hawks up 22-8 and added the 2-point conversion to put the Hawks up 24-8. The Hawks defense continued to play well as Senior cornerback Sam Wells came up with a pick but the Hawks weren’t able to capitalize coming up short on a fourth down play. The half ended with the Hawks up 24-8.
The Hawks defense picked up right where they left off to start the second half when cornerback Clay Mueller picked off a Prairie Farm pass and took it 55 yards to the house to put the Hawks up 30-8 after the PAT came up short. The Hawks continued their defensive stands turning the ball over on downs on two straight series. The Hawks offense finally found the endzone early in the fourth quarter when Isaiah snuck it in from the one, he also added the two-point on a veer play to put the Hawks up 38-8.
It only took the ensuing kick-off for Prairie Farm to answer that score when Miller ran through a number of would-be tacklers for a big kick-off return for a TD to close the score to 38-16. It was great to see the Hawks offense come back and make up for the special teams miscue and tack on the final score of the evening on a Clay Mueller 41 yard touchdown on a power sweep to make the final 46-16. What a job by the Blackhawk offensive line of Winston Poehler, Jordan Wulff, Jack Wendler, Aron Sanchez, and Tegan Treankler as they rolled up over 400 yards of rushing offense for the evening!
The Blackhawks will take on the Cornell Chieftains this Friday evening for their home and parent’s night! Kick-off is at 7:00 p.m. Come out and be a part of Blackhawk Football 2025!
