The Boys Basketball varsity team shot well from behind the three-point arc, which propelled them to an 86-40 victory over the host Gilman Pirates as the Blackhawks now have a 9-4 overall record this season.
Gilman scored first with a long three to get the game started as the Hawks went empty on their first three possessions. Dominic Sherwood then found Winston Poehler open at the high post for the Blackhawks' first points of the game. The Hawks then scored on the next seven possessions and grabbed the lead away from the Pirates. During that stretch, Sherwood knocked in a pair of threes along with Jack Wendler scoring twice on the inside. A third Sherwood three later put the Blackhawks' lead at 18-9. Sam Wells and Sherwood would each connect on another three, as the outside shooting continued off passes from Colin Fritz and Wendler. Senior Mason Gay then rattled off four points of his own on a drive and the free throw line to continue the lead for the Hawks. After battling on the boards to get additional shots Poehler kicked one out to Fritz, who drilled a deep three. As the half wound down, Gay finished it with a steal and lay-up, and Poehler got a hoop and the harm to complete a three-point play and the Hawks led 36-19 at the midpoint.
The Blackhawks continued their aggressive offensive approach in the second half, with Poehler knocking down a three to start. Gay then threw a pinpoint pass inside that Wendler paid off, as Gay then scored six straight after that. Threes from Wells and Poehler and a 16-footer by Brett Baehr upped the lead to 28. The Blackhawks were able to build on the lead with a few jumpers from Sherwood and Wells along with a pair by Talon Mueller and free throws by Preston Fritz to win by a final of 86-40.
The Blackhawks were 19-30 (63%) from two point range and finished 12-30 from the three-point arc for 40%. They also did well handling the ball with only 8 turnovers for the night and 22 assists.
Box Score: Gay 20 pts, 7 rebs, 6 asts, 4 stls; Sherwood 17 pts, 5 rebs, 5 asts; Poehler 14 pts, 7 rebs, 4 asts; Wells 11 pts, 2 rebs; Fritz 8 pts, 4 rebs, 5 asts, 4 stls; Wendler 8 pts, 5 rebs, 2 asts; Mueller 4pts; P. Fritz 2 pts; Baehr 2 pts, 4 rebs.
Coach's Comments
This was a solid overall game for our guys as we are hitting a stretch of six games in 12 days so this game allowed us to work on a few things, but more importantly sharpen up our execution on both ends of the court. We shot the ball well tonight and played unselfish, as that is what makes this team strong, as each player is playing for the guys next to him and they cheer on each others' success.
