The Blackhawks and Greyhounds battled in an Eastern Conference game on Tuesday night as defense from both teams was dominant. The visiting Greyhounds got the win in a close game to the end by a final 50-47.
Scoring was at a premium as the Blackhawks got some early baskets from Mason Gay as he hit a couple of threes to get the home team rolling. A pair of post baskets by Jack Wendler and four points from Winston Poehler kept the Blackhawks tied. Brett Baehr scored inside, with Gay knocking in two more hoops as the Blackhawks trailed 24-20 at the half.
The second half was more of the same, with more points coming at the free throw line as the Blackhawks continued to be aggressive. A Dominic Sherwood three loosened the Hounds' defense. Colin Fritz earned a tough inside hoop to keep the Hawks close and Gay continued to attack the rim for 12 second half points. A late Sherwood three got the Hawks within one, but a pair of Loyal free throws with three seconds put them up by three. The Hawks' one last attempt missed with the final being 50-47.
The Hawks shot 16 for 40 for the game and only had 11 turnovers with 5 steals.
Box Score: Gay 21 pts, 2 rebs, 2 asts; Sherwood 9 pts, 2 stls; Poehler 6 pts, 7 rebs, 3 asts, 3 stls; Wendler 4 pts, 3 rebs; Fritz 3 pts, 5 rebs; Wells 2 pts; Baehr 2 pts.
Coach's Comments
It was a battle between two solid teams during the entire game, as our players kept at it until the final horn. I liked how well we took care of the ball and played defense throughout the game.
It was Senior Night, and we honored our six seniors: Mason Gay, Colin Fritz, Dominic Sherwood, Brett Baehr, Carter Lindgren, and Mathew Wilson. I am so proud and thankful for everything that these guys have done throughout the years. Thanks to all their parents and families for their support and being there for their sons. I truly can't say enough about each of them and for who they are and what they have done for the Blackhawks Program.
