The Blackhawks’ bats came alive Thursday against Colby/Abbotsford, producing 13 hits and 12 runs in a performance that proved just how dangerous their lineup can be. Isabella Lewallen set the tone with three hits, while Reegan Ruggles and Lydia VanArk each added two. Lilli Stinson and Joselyn LaRock crossed the plate three times apiece, keeping constant pressure on the opposing defense.
The game also revealed the other side of the story, with defensive miscues including four errors and missed opportunities that allowed Colby/Abbotsford to pile up 18 runs. As the innings wore on, the Blackhawks’ early energy faded, something the team quickly recognized as a key area to improve, the game 18-12 in Colby/Abbotsford’s favor.
Facing Columbus Catholic on Friday meanwhile, the Blackhawks fell 12–4, but with progress made. The defense tightened up and the team played clean, committing no errors and making several standout plays behind their pitcher. More importantly, they sustained their focus for all seven innings, battling from start to finish.
At the plate, Lydia VanArk continued her strong play, going two-for-three with an RBI and a run scored. In the circle, Isabella Lewallen delivered a steady performance, working through seven innings while limiting walks and keeping her team in the fight.
Owen-Withee varsity head softball coach Zach Feind shared more after the games.
“I thought that Thursday went alright,” he said. “We did a lot of good things but also made too many mistakes.
“Offensively we hit the ball well, we had 13 total hits and scored 12 runs. Sometimes we could have been a little more patient at the plate but overall offensively went well.
“Defensively we had some struggles. We allowed 18 total runs. Credit to Colby they hit the ball well also. Our defense made a few good plays but missed a lot of chances, including making four errors. Learning to capitalize on these opportunities will allow us to get back into our dugout faster and help our pitchers out.
“We learned a lot from Thursday's game, I think the biggest thing we needed to learn was not to lose our intensity throughout the game. We started strong but faded as the game went along.
“The girls played much better team defense Friday in a 12-4 loss to Columbus Catholic. But they battled through 7 hard fought innings keeping focus throughout.”
The Blackhawks now face Loyal-Greenwood Thursday, May 7 at Owen-Withee High School. Game start is 5 p.m.
