The Owen-Withee Blackhawks culminated Homecoming week with a lopsided 79-6 win over the Almond-Bancroft Eagles. For a while last week, it looked like the Blackhawks might not even have a Homecoming game as Alma Center Lincoln canceled on Tuesday afternoon leaving the Hawks scrambling for a game. A big thank you to Athletic Director Hailey Kadolph for quickly pulling the pieces together so the boys could enjoy a Homecoming game.
With a short week of practice, the Hawks prepared for the 3-3 Almond-Bancroft Eagles, a team that featured the leading rusher in the State for 8-man football averaging just under 230 yards a game. Even though he was the featured back, the Eagles quarterback factored into the equation with just under 100 yards a game rushing and the capability of stretching the field with the pass out of the Eagle’s spread formations.
With it being Senior night, Homecoming week, and the play-off matrix looming large, the Hawks had plenty of motivation coming into the game and it showed as the Blackhawks played some very inspired football. The offensive line of Treankler. Wulff, Sanchez, Sherwood and Dallman owned the line of scrimmage and had their best showing of the season carving up the Eagles defense for 166 rushing yards and six scores in the first quarter. The Blackhawk defense did not disappoint either as the Hawks held the leading rusher in the State to a minus six yards rushing for the evening. With a big first quarter, the Hawks turned the game over to the underclassmen and they kept it rolling adding 31 points of their own in the last three quarters of the game making the final score 79-6.
The Blackhawks will finish up the regular season at Athens, Friday night, with a 7:00 p.m. kick-off. The game is a huge game for both schools as they both have a 5-2 record with a potential number 3-seed in the play-offs at stake.
