95 Years Ago – August 29, 1929
A search is being made throughout Wisconsin today for Paul Peterson, age 27, who shot and killed his sister, Mrs. Ernest Riggs, of Greenwood, and mortally wounded his brother-in-law, Ernest Riggs, the husband of the dead woman. The family gives the only possible cause of the shooting as family trouble which caused Peterson’s wife to leave him. Peterson felt that the Riggs family had been partly responsible for his wife leaving him and he planned to get revenge.
85 Years Ago – August 31, 1939
A high school transportation law was recently passed by the state legislature and approved by the governor. The law provides for the transportation to high school of any non-resident of a high school district. The cost of transportation will be charged against the township in which the student resides.
75 Years Ago – September1, 1949
Mac’s Bakery, Owen, will re-open its doors to the public Monday after having been closed for the past two weeks because of remodeling work being done to the interior of the building.
65 Years Ago – August 27, 1959
A traditional gown of nylon tulle and Chantilly lace was chosen by Miss Darlene Clare Burhop, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Burhop, Owen, for her marriage in St. Katherine’s Episcopal Church Saturday, August 15, to Robert Zank, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Zank, Neillsville.
55 Years Ago – August 28, 1969
Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Frost of Withee celebrated their golden wedding anniversary Saturday and Sunday, August 16 and 17. A special communion service on Saturday was attended by the family and guests and at noon there was an anniversary dinner, the remainder of the day being spent socially. On Sunday, open house, was held from 2 to 5 p.m. at Nazareth Lutheran Church and in the morning the couple’s brother-in-law, the Rev. Edwin Hansen conducted a service.
45 Years Ago – August 29, 1979
The Owen community celebration and dedication of the new concession building in the Owen Mill Pond Park will take place on Sunday afternoon, September 9, according to Jim Riley, Owen Junior Fair Board chairman. At that time, the keys to the new building will be presented to the City of Owen.
35 Years Ago – August 31, 1989
The joint special meeting of the City of Owen Common Council and the Withee Village Board met at the Withee Hall on Tuesday, August 22, 1989. Perry Carrington engineering representatives explained Withee’s water quality problems and future plans for a water treatment facility. They also stated that Owen would be facing a decline in water supply because of future DNR requirements on some of the old wells. Withee, along with the engineers, proposed a joint water treatment facility. FmHA representatives explained how Withee is eligible for aid in solving their water problems, but that it would be unlikely that Owen would qualify for aid. They also confirmed that a joint facility would be economically more feasible than separate projects.
25 Years Ago – September 1, 1999
It has been brought to our attention that there was at least one other young lady from Owen-Withee who served as Miss Clark County—LeeAnn Bruchert held that honor in 1978.
Nazareth Lutheran Church in Withee has purchased a new organ, installed on August 26. The new instrument has many new features and it is much more user friendly.
Indianhead Community Action Agency will hold their opening and commodity distribution at their new location at 537 E. 3rd Street on Wednesday, September 1 at 9 a.m., with Grand Opening Friday, September 3.

Colonial Center resident Martha Herr celebrated her 100th birthday in grand fashion with parties Saturday, August 22, at the family farm in rural Greenwood and Sunday, August 23, at the nursing home in Colby.
A group of 11 friends gathered at the Poplar Apartments on August 19 to help Lorraine Smith celebrate her 92nd birthday.
