95 Years Ago – September 12, 1929

Annie Laurie Barager, age 66, passed away at 3:15 Monday afternoon, September 9, 1929 at the home of her son, Irving C. Barager. Mrs. Barager was the senior partner with her son Vernon P. in the ownership of The Owen Enterprise.

In the first annual golf tournament at the Meadowview Country Club, Mrs. A.J. Olson defeated Mrs. Henry Weddig, runner-up, to win the Ladies’ Cup.

A deal was made this week whereby C.E. Bollom sold his meat market to Alex McAdam. Mr. McAdam has been employed in the City Meat Market for the past seven years.

85 Years Ago – September 14, 1939

A group of business and professional men met last evening at the Meadowview clubhouse and formulated plans for an organization in the city. The Lions Club will endeavor to carry on community service and welfare within the city.

The Cash Store at Clark, which has been operated by Mr. and Mrs. Frank VanderWegen for the past several years, was sold this week to Ernest Reinhardt of Greenwood, who took possession on Monday.

75 Years Ago – September 15, 1949

As of Tuesday of this week the Fremont Hotel is under the management of Messrs. Elton Collier and Charles Heath. The two took possession of the business after purchasing it from Lawrence Heath.

Heavy loss resulting from fire at the 19th Hole Tavern Saturday night occurred. An alarm summoned the Owen Community Fire Association truck to that place when a fire broke out in the tavern kitchen. Loss was estimated at between $2,500 and $3,000. Only the building and stock were covered by insurance. No insurance was carried on the fixtures.

65 Years Ago – September 10, 1959

A bolt of lightning struck a large willow tree on the Peter Deltova farm in the Town of Longwood during a severe electrical storm late Saturday night with the result being a herd of 12 Holstein cows were killed.

A village landmark once the site of Dorchester’s public school, was completely destroyed by fire last Thursday morning. Since 1920, the two-story frame structure on Center Avenue had been the Dorchester Ford garage.

55 Years Ago – September 13, 1969

L.C. Christensen & Co. of Abbotsford has just completed shipment of 34 head of central Wisconsin’s finest Holstein dairy heifers to St. Thomas Island of the Virgin Islands.

Miss Sylvia Kay Sundling was wed to Richard Dale Hansen Saturday, August 16 at 2:30 p.m.

45 Years Ago – September 13, 1979

The Village of Withee will again have the services of their own policeman, as an area man has been appointed the new Chief of Police. He is David Fischer, of Route 1, Colby. Prior to his recent appointment he was a reserve Clark County Deputy.

O-W School District Administrator Donald Schneider has resigned his position as superintendent of the Owen-Withee School District to take a new position as financial consultant with the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.

35 Years Ago – September 14, 1989

Demolition of the old school building on Third Street in Owen came under discussion at the Owen Common Council meeting Tuesday evening, September 5. The engineering firm of Perry-Carrington of Marshfield will proceed with plans and specifications, not to exceed $3,500, covering the demolition.

The Golden Wedding Anniversary of Gordon and Beatrice Thorson of Owen was celebrated on Saturday, September 3, 1989 with a reception held at the Meadowview Golf Course.

25 Years Ago – September 15, 1999

Mrs. Dorothy “Dottie” Bjornstad could measure her span of employment at the Owen Post Office by the cost of a postage stamp. In 1969, working as a postal clerk, a first class stamp cost 6¢, in 1977, then Postmaster, 13¢, and on retirement that letter calls for a 33¢ stamp. Dottie was honored Friday afternoon with a surprise reception at the Owen Post Office.

The City of Owen recently approached the Village of Withee with a proposal to consider that Owen would purchase water from Withee. The two communities have reached a 20 year agreement. Owen’s need for water is being driven by an Administrative Order issued by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources for Owen to abandon two of the city’s seven production wells. Closing either of these wells will leave the City without an adequate water supply. Extensive test drilling for new well sites in Owen has been unsuccessful.

15 Years Ago – September 16, 2009

On Friday morning, Lions Club members from Owen-Withee, Thorp, Abbotsford, Colby and Medford took to the links in a fun-filled golf fundraiser for kids, held at Meadowview Golf Course.
