95 Years Ago – September 19, 1929

The Community Club at Clark to make arrangements to stage an athletic carnival and vaudeville on Friday evening, September 27. Mads Madsen, the noted wrestler, will wrestle the masked marvel and a bag punching exhibition will be given by the champion of the northwest.

85 Years Ago – September 21, 1939

Fire which was noticed breaking out of the dry kiln wood at the Mauel Ice Cream Factory at 11:50 a.m. by Mrs. Arnie Hoeper, caused a loss of about 75 cords. The cause of the fire is unknown. Thirty cords of the wood three feet in length was hauled in and piled up yesterday.

A beautiful muskie measuring 42½ inches in length and weighing 24 pounds was displayed yesterday in the front of the City Meat Market. The fish was caught by Dr. R.H. Dike while on a fishing trip in Canada a week ago.

75 Years Ago – September 22, 1949

Owen’s to have another place. Construction was started a week ago on a new feed mill building which when completed will be a 30x80 foot structure of concrete block. It will have a 17x34 foot basement. The business will be owned and managed by Ray Wagner of this city.

The 19th Hole Tavern, which was recently gutted by fire will have its “Grand Opening” Wednesday night, September 28. Completely remodeled the tavern is now the finest in this part of the country as it has a new and unique lighting system, its floor plan is altogether different than its patrons knew it before the fire.

65 Years Ago – September 17, 1959

Rejoicing at the arrival of an infant son are Mr. and Mrs. Toivo Makinen. Michael Walter was born Monday afternoon at 2:05 at Victory Memorial Hospital and weighed six pounds and 12 ounces.

Staff Sergeant Clyde F. Peissig of Box 68, Curtiss, was recently awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal for his assistance in training Great Britain’s newly formed missile force.

55 Years Ago – September 18, 1969

Plans to erect a cocktail lounge in Withee were announced this week by Paul and Judy Smriga. The Smrigas have disclosed that plans are indefinite at this time. Location of the new “Briarwood Lounge” will be on the tract of land owned by the Smrigas south of the Withee city limits on the junction of Highways 73 and 29.

Yellow glads and white carnations were on the altar of St. John’s Lutheran Church at Withee Saturday afternoon, August 23, for the wedding of Miss Lois Jean Hatlestad and Dallas Loy Wuethrich.

45 Years Ago – September 19, 1979

Paul and Jan Olson are the new owners of The Spot Bar, which they took over on August 31.

Following the resignation of Owen-Withee School District administrator Donald Schneider last week, there have been some major changes with the present administration of the O-W school. Elementary principal Gerald Nelson has been offered, and has accepted the position of district administrator, Art Feldman, O-W junior high principal has been offered and has accepted the position of elementary principal, and the new high school principal J. Terry Downen, will assume the combined duties of senior and junior high principal.

35 Years Ago – September 21, 1989

A hearing conducted by the Wisconsin Division of Hearing and Appeals will be given next Wednesday, September 27 at 10:30 a.m. at the courthouse in Neillsville for the Village of Curtiss. President of the Village of Curtiss Les Bowen filed the petition. The issue is on the question of whether or not the DNR had a reason or the authority to require the Village to monitor the wastewater flow from Abbyland Pork Pack and the NFO Transfer Station.

25 Years Ago – September 22, 1999

Stacy J. Prepluh and Jeff W. Rasmussen exchanged wedding vows during a 2:30 p.m. ceremony at Nazareth Lutheran Church, Withee, on September 4, 1999.

On August 7, brothers Thorvald and Kristian Frost placed “Legacy Stones” as a tribute to the three years they served their country during World War II. After basic training and maneuvers, they were shipped to England until landing in Normandy in late June 1944. After the war Thorvald had the dubious honor of guarding the German War Generals at Mondorf, Luxembourg. Kris guarded them enroute to Nuremberg for the trials.

15 Years Ago – September 23, 2009

On September 17, 2009 the City of Owen presented a check for $224,475 to Clark County for the purchase of 71 acres on the southside of Highway 29.

Michelle Renderman, Clerk/Treasurer for the Village of Withee, was among the graduates of the 2009 Wisconsin Municipal Clerks and Treasurers Institute.
