The Granton FFA and FFA Alumni will be hosting a “Steinbach Family Benefit” carnival and kickball tournament on September 21 as a fundraiser for Cheryl Steinbach and her family. All the proceeds from the event are to go towards helping Cheryl and her family cover medical costs for Cheryl’s ongoing medical treatment for glioblastoma. Cheryl was the Granton High School agriculture teacher and FFA advisor from 1988-2016.

The city of Colby will be raising its municipal water utility rates after applying to Wisconsin Public Service Commission for a simplified rate case at the end of August. The rate is set to increase by 4.1 percent from the prior rate and will take effect on October 15 of this year. Residents will see the resulting increase on their November bills.

An Abbotsford man accused of killing his two young daughters and injuring his wife in a knife attack has been deemed unfit to face trial at this time after a psychological evaluation determined him to be mentally incompetent. The court will be provided with progress reports on Victor Manuel Gomez Acosta’s condition every three months and 30 days prior to the expiration of the 12-month limit.

With permission from voters to spend up to $17 million on classroom additions and building renovations, the Abbotsford School Board is now faced with a decision on whether or not to expand the scope of the plans to accommodate future growth. At a facilities committee meeting last Friday, architect Tim Ruppert of HSR Associates told board members about an option for constructing four additional classrooms that were not part of the referendum. An extra 6,500 square feet would need to be built onto the northwest corner of the elementary school, pushing the building closer to a playground. Any future expansion would require the playground to be relocated.

The Thorp Police Department is asking for assistance from the public regarding a series of burglaries that took place in the city of Thorp last week. The Thorp Police Department is asking for residents of the city to review their home security surveillance systems for any suspicious activity. Thorp Police Chief Ty Schneider advises residents of Thorp to lock their vehicles, remove valuables from their vehicles and for residents to keep their floodlights on as well as any home surveillance systems they might have.

Stanley Republican

A full Stanley Council tackled the meeting agenda on Monday evening. Returning from closed session, the Council created an interim Head Water Operator position and then voted to offer that position to current city employee Dean Schneider at $30.50 per hour with a six month probationary period.

At the September 3 meeting, the Stanley City Council began discussions to hire Konect for shared website hosting to create a Parks website for online registrations for the Chapman Park Campground and City pavilions for 2025. The initial cost would be $12,000 with an annual hosting fee cost of $1,500.
