The Owen Canning Company, one of the city’s leading industrial organizations and one of the foremost Pea Canning organizations in this country, are sponsors, together with other members, of a nationwide radio program which is rapidly becoming one of the most popular features on the air.
85 Years Ago – May 2, 1940
The job of planting 1,000 spruce trees, a program that was recently announced by the Owen Commercial Club was started Wednesday. The work is being done under the supervision of the Commercial Club with Dr. M.V. Nason taking active charge with the aid of the city employees and other volunteers. The work yesterday of planting was being done on the east shore of the Mill Pond.
75 Years Ago – May 4, 1950
“Prince” a bluetick hound dog owned by Jack Mengel, Route 1, Withee, came away from the field trials runoff at Mosinee Sunday, with high honors.
The Village Board of Withee, Tuesday night, confirmed the appointment of Donald “Bud” Poppe as the village’s new constable and street and water commissioner.
The dates of the big community Silver Anniversary and Homecoming party are drawing near with more definite plans being formulated and announced daily. Although the movement centers around the idea of celebrating 25 years of cityhood for this city, the primary purpose is to make it a whole community homecoming event—one in which everybody living in this community may participate.
65 Years Ago – May 5, 1960
The physical education demonstration will be held Thursday night, May 12, beginning at 8:00 p.m. in the Senior High School gymnasium. This year students from the Junior High School, Senior High School, and some grades will participate.
On Sunday, May 1, 1960, Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church of Owen observed its 45th anniversary. Bethany had her beginning in 1911, when the early Finnish pioneers settled in the Owen area and before the organizing of the congregation. The church building was constructed November 30, 1915, upon a lot donated by the John S. Owen Lumber Company.
55 Years Ago – April 30, 1970
Miss Carol German, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin German, Route 2, Withee, was the winner of the Clark County Regional Spelling Bee held at Owen on Thursday afternoon April 23, 1970.
Clark County Representative Frank Nikolay announced April 22 that he would be a candidate for the Democratic nomination for Lieutenant Governor.
45 Years Ago – May 1, 1980
During a special executive meeting of the Owen Common Council on Tuesday evening, April 22, 1980, the members of the city council approved the appointment of Harry Bonk as the new Director of Public Works for the city.
35 Years Ago – May 3, 1980
The former Stenseth house on Hwy X. between Owen and Withee is being torn down by Justin Rosemeyer of Thorp. This will be the future site of Joe’s Refrigeration.
Congressman Dave Obey has announced the appointment of Randall J. Nelson as a cadet to the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs.
25 Years Ago – May 3, 2000
On Tuesday, April 25 the tradition of the local court making its circuit around the county returned to Clark County as Judge Jon Counsell continued his attempt to make the courts more community friendly. Students and staff as well as members of the Owen-Withee community had the opportunity to see court in action as Clark County Court was held in official session at the O-W Cafeteria from 8:30 to 3:30 that day.
