It’s snowing! It’s snowing! It’s snowing! I heard excited little voices exclaiming as I sat at my library desk scanning books. The pure joy of seeing those first few flakes echoed through the hallways and I am sure could be heard in half the school. I don’t know about the rest of the staff…but I was happy to hear this weather report straight from the mouths of the littles. The child in me also rejoiced, not quite to the screaming out in glee level, more like ironically a warm cozy feeling inside. I had just ordered a new long winter coat to keep me toasty during recess duty, so I thought “bring it on.”
We have already had a few hat and mittens days to break in the kiddos but soon they will have to be in full blown artic gear, which includes snow boots and snow pants.
Yes, adding these requirements means inevitably sending kids to the office to see if there are any extra snowpants and boots they can borrow or if not, the snow is off limits. These extra instructions during recess can be frustrating because I hate to see them having to stay on the sidewalk and not enjoy the winter wonderland and also, I hate to see the kids shiver in the cold. But I will try earnestly to get over the stress of being the winter gear police and enjoy the snowy landscape and capture the essence of the childlike joy sparked from those fluffy crystals falling from the sky.
I think as adults it’s important to find something that recaptures that child in us. Sometimes it only takes a few snowflakes.
Stay warm and sunny everyone!
