Owen-Withee High School is celebrating homecoming week which began September 23. The kids will again decorate the halls and have fun dress-up days to show their school spirit.
“Homecoming is always a fun and entertaining time throughout the halls of a school district,” said Mr. Caleb Green, OWHS teacher. “Dress up days, pep rallies, and students bursting at the seams with pride for their school. Oh, and don’t forget about the dance! As a student, Homecoming offers a time of unity for all as they come together to support one common goal. From the outside as a former student, this weeklong tradition can mean even more. As an alum coming back to a school for the first time in what could be years, it is a chance to look back on all of the memories made in a building that shaped who you are today. It is the opportunity to take in the youth of today that are carrying on the traditions and legacy that you helped build. Pride is something that grows with time as you are able to come back to things like this. For some, it is their first time coming back in almost 20 years. This week, we host multiple home sporting events as a part of Homecoming Week, and you bet that Owen-Withee Alumni will be in attendance. Take the chance to talk with them, learn from them, engage in conversation that will help you understand the importance of this building to them. Lastly, appreciate the time you have here as it is finite and even if you don’t think you will, you’ll miss this at some point.”
OWHS student Cassidy Graski shares her excitement for the homecoming week and encourages students to participate. “We’re excited to embrace a homecoming theme this year that honors the unique customs and heritage from all corners of the world,” said Cassidy. “This year’s homecoming theme is “Around the World!” Each grade was able to pick a country from around the world. The Seniors chose Greece, the Juniors picked France, the Sophomores landed on Japan, and the Freshmen decided to go with Italy. Each class will have to come up with a design using that country’s monuments, traditions, and symbols to create a decorated hallway. This not only brings in school spirit for the big football game, but it is also used for scoring in the Homecoming competition. Speaking of competition, make sure you are at school next Friday for the Homecoming Assembly. We will be competing in games such as Volleyball, Powderpuff, tug-of-war, and mattress races. So be sure to show up, participate, and cheer loud so that your grade has a chance of winning this year’s Homecoming Competition.”
The Homecoming football game will be on Friday night and Cassidy has this to say about the big game, “This year the Owen-Withee Blackhawks will face off against Alma Center Lincoln. The Hawks have a strong history of beating the Hornets in past years so we are confident that we can do it again. Make sure you come to cheer on the football team to victory! There will also be a half-time performance from the Owen-Withee pep band which will be something you don’t want to miss. We have also already set the theme as School Spirit to show off our Blackhawk Pride. So, make sure you come to the game in red and black and be ready to lose your voice. Let’s go Blackhawks!”
The week of school spirit concludes with the Homecoming Dance on Saturday, September 28.
