The Owen Parks & Rec Committee met on Monday, July 7. Discussion began with the dog park. It was noted that things are going well. They might need to add some signage asking people to not leave their dog toys there. There was a complaint about gaps around the fence. If the city puts some dirt there, Rob Ruggles is willing to feather it out. It is getting a lot of use. They could add a donation box for upkeep.
They then moved on to a discussion about the playground equipment. They had heard complaints about the equipment and the grills at Mill Pond Park. It was noted that any upgrades will require the equipment to meet ADA standards. The cost of new equipment could start at $94,000. Dennis Looker has been working on fixing the grills with help from the O-W Lions. They talked about spraying off the equipment. DPW Chad Smith said that Medford did donations and it took them three years. The playground equipment will have to be replaced eventually. Chair Ray Kilty will look for grants. They can also look for donations. Wood chips can’t be used as a base anymore. They can maybe work with the Lions on getting something done. Smith also said that on the back side of the band pavilion some of the posts are coming out of the ground.
They agreed to allow the Woodgrove Workers 4-H to do some renovations to the concession stand at Mill Pond Park. The 4-H had approached the Fair Board. They would like to use part of the storage area and put a window in, line it with stainless, add a hood and fan. Aaron Ruggles talked to Ross Kaz and he is willing to donate some of the work. Kaz said they could use the existing standpipe for venting. The area used to be bathrooms, so it is already there. The 4-H will do the work and pay for it.
The Committee will plan a workday at the park. One of the swings at Kerry Park was removed due to safety concerns. That equipment could possibly be prepped and painted next year on Community Service Day. Smith also reported on how pleased a couple of out-of-state campers were with the campground and the city. He said the stumps were removed from the campground.
