Owen Withee Area Historical Society hosts ice cream social

‘84 state basketball team invited to sign commemorative ball

On Saturday, August 17, the Owen-Withee Area Historical Society held an ice cream social and open house. The Owen Main Street Car Show was also held on this day so it made a great day to reconnect with old friends, gander at some grand old and new cars on main street, peruse the historical gems in the OWAHS museum and enjoy Owen’s very own Mauel’s Ice Cream.

OWAHS member and Owen-Withee enthusiast Tim Nolan reached out to members of the 1984 girls state basketball team and inquired about having a 40th reunion. As the reunion has not been set or may not happen, a smaller scale remembrance is now in motion. Betsy (Kovala) Wacker donated a basketball for the members of the team to sign and leave at the OWAHS museum. All members are encouraged to sign the ball when they are able. On Saturday, Betsy (Kovala) Wacker, Shelly (Soczka) Serocki, Missy (Klabon) Dowden and Nicole (Gajewsky) Rogers got the ball rolling by being the first to sign. As far as a reunion for the 84 team? Many said it would be fun but difficult to gather everyone.

“I would like to thank the Owen Centennial Committee for working the ice cream stand outside the Owen-Withee Area Historical Society, Inc..” said Tim Nolan. “What a wonderful group to get to team up with for a common cause. I would also like to thank John Mauel and Mauel's Dairy for supplying the best ice cream in the area for our ice cream social. I would lastly, but most importantly, like to thank all of Blackhawk Nation for showing up to help support our two groups. The area and people are still very much something I've always bragged about and will continue to do so! Thanks to everyone for their support.”
