One of the common threads of discussion that happen around me seems to be focused around this idea of "too much going on, not enough clarity, always busy, busy, busy." And it got me thinking and turning the reality of the current days around in my mind. Then, seemingly out of the blue, a movie quote showed up in front of me on that handy dandy Internet.

The quote is from The Hunt for Red October and goes as follows: “This business will get out of control. It'll get out of control, and we'll be lucky to live through it." In the case of that quote, it was just after a naval aircraft crashed while attempting to land on an aircraft carrier in rough seas. And there was threat of nuclear war. But that was a movie, and I'd like to come back to reality.

I agree with the idea that there is a lot of "out of control" going on right now, and it leads to a great deal of whipped up emotion and other fervor about "things." And most of those "things" aren't really real, important, or should be earning the energy they are commanding from us. And if they are real, important, and deserving of our effort, it is incredibly difficult to weed out the truly important from the "noise" of living in today's world and society.

I don't remember who or where, exactly, I heard this, but I know someone respectable shared that at times, they simply shut it all off and walk away. They take care of their responsibilities, and simply do not partake in the rest for a while. Sometimes it's less than an hour, or a few hours, or even a full day. Sometimes it's weeks. They identify what's important, and focus there, fully. And they find that once they re-engage with the rest, it has changed their perspective and attitude for the better. The other thing that this same person talked about was all of the things they had lived through. So much had been presented as a massive and dire situation, and in the end, it simply never became what it was suggested it would be.

I think it's important to bear in mind that there is a lot going on. And yes, we need to be aware of it and pay some sort of attention to it. But a great many things just aren't so crucially important in our daily lives that it requires us to take undue action or induce undue stress over. Focus on what's important in your daily life. Focus on your family and friends. Pay attention to the rest. But remember that none of it should embitter you or wear you down. Take care of the important, due your due diligence. And time proves that things tend to work out.
