One thing you quickly notice when the playoffs begin, is the discrepancy between areas of the state and certainly Conferences around the state when talking the level of football being played. That was the case Friday night when the Owen-Withee Blackhawks took care of business against Port Edwards with a dominating 60-6 win in Level 1 of the WIAA playoffs.
The Hawks defense forced a quick three and out after Port Edwards received the opening kick-off and gave the offense some good field position. The offensive line got off the ball quickly gaining control of the LOS but a fumble put a halt on the Blackhawks first possession. Another three and out by the defense turned the ball back over to the offense and that’s when the dominance began! An 11-play drive capped off with a six yard TD by Talon Mueller started the six touchdown onslaught by the Hawks in the first half triggering a running clock in the second quarter and the Blackhawks jumping out to a 46-6 lead at the intermission. The Blackhawks running attack with it’s rotation of Mason Gay, Talon Mueller, Sully Poehler, and Dominic Sherwood did a great job of running to daylight but it was the play once again of the offensive line of Tim Stock, Sam Rasmussen, Jack Wendler, Colin Fritz, Mathew Wilson, and Winston Poehler that has been setting the tone all season long offensively for the Hawks!
The second half didn’t start out well for the Blackhawks, as Port Edwards recovered a well placed onside kick. But again, the defense stepped up and shut the door on any hope of Port Edwards trying to establish something offensively. It was another solid effort by the defense as they created four turnovers, one of which they took in for a score and limited Port Edwards to under a 100 yards on the ground and in the air. The Blackhawks JV players got some solid minutes and salted away the win for the Hawks in the fourth quarter.
The Blackhawks will host Chippewa Falls McDonnell in Level II of the playoffs Friday night with a 7:00 p.m. kick-off. Come out and support the Hawks as they take the next step on the ladder – one game at a time!
