I never thought I would see the day where I said I was ashamed to be an American, but it has arrived. We are no longer the leader of the free world. We are just a third world nation led by a bully.
The petulant man-child in the White House is willing to alienate just about everyone in his efforts to take over Greenland. He says that it is for our national security. Greenland has been under Home Rule giving them some autonomy for almost 50 years. We have never been attacked by Greenland, or Denmark for that matter. But what will happen if Trump follows through. If he puts on more tariffs, we will pay. If he negotiates a purchase, we will pay. If he decides on a military takeover, we will pay in more ways than one. We will pay in dollars and cents. We will pay in lost lives. We will pay as NATO defends one of its own against another. This assumes NATO even continues to exist. NATO has made us safer. President Trump’s actions have not.
Then there is Venezuela where our president ordered the removal of a leader. He said it was about drugs, but he has pardoned others when it comes to drugs. It is about oil and money.
Then there are the protestors in Minneapolis. Apparently, it is okay to attack and kill them. Minnesota has nothing to offer Trump. But in Iran, it is wrong, according to our president. Again, it is about oil and money. ICE is hiding behind masks, hiring convicted felons (who were pardoned by Trump), and now he is threatening to bring in the military. Minnesota is looking at using their National Guard to keep the peace. Our military is there to protect our nation, not be given orders to destroy it.
Our president seems not to grasp reality, in addition to having a double standard. It is good if it helps him, it is bad if it does not. The truly scary thing in all this is that Trump has stated, “My own morality. My own mind. It’s the only thing that can stop me. I don’t need international law. I’m not looking to hurt people.” Trump has no morals and his actions continually hurt people. That includes us, the citizens he is supposed to represent.
The question at this point is will our republic cease to exist this fall. Trump is saying maybe we don’t need mid-term elections. That is more about him worrying about being impeached than the fact that elections aren’t necessary. We should be looking at the historical record in this regard. Elections were necessary in Germany until Hitler decided they weren’t. Legislators were necessary in Russia until Lenin decided they weren’t. In a country that is becoming more and more militarized, we need to take notice or we might share the same fate.
