It is hard to think of an American who is more undeserving of the title of president than Donald J. Trump. He has, at every opportunity, proven himself to lack both the character and the morals that we should expect from someone who holds the highest office in our nation. His temperament is that of a spoiled child, name-calling and throwing temper tantrums when he doesn’t get his way. We should aspire to have a president that is wise, honest, empathetic, courageous, and humble. He is, without exception, exactly none of those things.
These shortcomings alone should disqualify him from being president, not in a legal sense, but in the eyes and hearts of the voters of this nation. Never mind his obvious mental decline, criminal record, ignorance about policy, or the rogues’ gallery that he surrounds himself with. He is utterly unfit to be president by any conceivable measure of what we should want in the leader of our country. That is why the only choice for president is Kamala Harris on November 5.
This presidential election is unlike any other presidential election that we’ve experienced in our lifetimes. Presidential elections have always been about deciding between two distinct visions for the future of America, but those visions have always respected the rule of law and worked within the framework of our Constitution. This election has a candidate who offers a vision that lies outside of that Constitutional framework. We must ask ourselves if we are going to allow someone to ascend to the presidency who has committed himself to dismantling our nation’s institutions, defying the norms of our democracy, and degrading the values that have defined our country for almost 250 years.
Harris’ career in public service has demonstrated that she is the antithesis to Trump’s lawlessness and disregard for the Constitution. She is not a perfect candidate, far from it. For many voters she represents this administration’s ambivalence towards the clear human rights violations taking place in Gaza. For others she represents this administration’s misguided border policies. But when put in contrast with the alternative, she is the clear choice for president.
It is not just that she is running against Trump. Yes, she is the best option in this race, but there are reasons to vote for her that go beyond simply voting against him. The tone of her campaign over the course of the past 10 weeks has been one of optimism, standing in stark contrast to the dark messages offered by both Biden and Trump. As she has campaigned, we have also started to get an outline of what her policy priorities would be as president.
And so while this election could be decided on character alone, let’s look at some policies. As a father, I worry about what the future of our nation holds for my son. Between the two candidates, Harris offers the better path forward. She has outlined plans to help more Americans afford home ownership and realize the American Dream, support small businesses, and lift up American workers. In contrast, Trump wants to provide more tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans while imposing tariffs on imports which would raise prices for consumers, compounding the struggles many families already feel as a result of inflation.
Harris has said that she wants to increase access to health care and continue to work to lower costs. She also supports women making their own health care decisions including reproductive decisions. Trump, on the other hand, had the Federalist Society handpick Supreme Court justices with the goal of overturning Roe v. Wade and rolling back women’s rights in our nation 50 years. He also spent a tremendous amount of energy trying to repeal the Affordable Care Act, something that one in seven Americans rely on for coverage. It was only thanks to the courage of the late Republican Senator John McCain that Trump was unable to undo the ACA. When asked in the debate this year what he would replace the ACA with, Trump said that he had a “concept of a plan.”
Abroad, Harris has worked with American allies and strengthened those alliances, advancing our interests overseas. Trump, however, has consistently praised our worst enemies, including brutal dictators like Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong-un. Harris recognizes the threat posed by global climate change and would work with our allies in helping to lead a global solution to a global crisis. Trump rejects climate change as a “hoax” and wants to roll back our energy policy just like he did with women’s rights.
The Republican Party, which was founded right here in Wisconsin, used to be a party that honored the rule of law and prided itself on its dedication to the Constitution. Now, it is simply a political machine that only serves Trump. That is why so many Republicans have endorsed Harris. I was able to attend an event where Congresswoman Liz Cheney (a conservative by any definition of the word) endorsed Harris. Cheney sees what so many others see, that this election is about more than partisanship, it is about our foundational principles as a nation: respect for the rule of law and the will of the people. For these reasons, and so many more, Kamala Harris is the only choice for president on November 5.
