Although I was not brimming with hope for all the decisions made at the polling places last week, the majority vote was tallied and I hope whether or not your candidates won, we can all respect the outcome with grace and civility and put the long-drawn-out political race to bed at least until the next cycle. As far as the local election is concerned, I am brimming with pride that our community came together to support our public school system. We may not be able to impact the larger nation with our vote or our actions, but we can still make a difference at home.

I am also very proud of our O-W students and all that they have accomplished this fall semester and all the state competitors on the field and stage. First to compete at state was Colton Paczkowski in Cross Country. He had an impressive run at Wisconsin Rapids placing 30th out of 151 competitors. Coach Lewison said his finish was the highest placing and fastest time for an O-W boy at the state meet in 22 years. Way to go Colton!

Next to make it to the state level is the One Act play thespians directed by Principal Julie Van Ark. Although she has had experience in directing, this is her first time taking the lead. Well done! Good luck students! Hope your experience competing at state will bring you even more skill and knowledge and maybe even a few more awards.

Lastly, the amazing undefeated football team under the leadership of many dedicated coaches and head coach Terry Laube, way to go! They too are on to the state level competition. This team has been so much fun to watch, and the games brought many folks to the stands. I had another reason I was drawn to the football bleachers, namely the cheer squad of which my granddaughter is an enthusiastic member. Boy did the cheerleaders have a lot to cheer for this year especially. While I am handing out “pats on the back” this one goes to the cheer squad coaches, Wendy Henke, Brooke Krause, Shawnna Pyrchalla and Alyssa Henke. The 3rd-6th grade squad gave the spectators so much to cheer for besides the outstanding offense and dominating defense on the field. The girls put in many long hours of practice, and it showed by their straight lines, synchronized movements and choir of voices. It brought a lump to my throat when I first saw my granddaughter cheer so proudly and confidently for the Blackhawks. And being a part of that small town community cheering on our youth…that choked me up as well.

Have a sunny week all.
