Thorp Area RC Club continues to make plans

Posted

As some of you may recall, I've been working with the owners of the Marshall RC Park to get our local radio control hobby club back in action again.  The progress has been slow, and that's understandable. A lot of people who were involved in the past have fallen out of the hobby, moved away, or passed away.  In addition, we missed a good number of club nights due to the weather.  Those light little drones and planes tend to lose a fight against high winds or heavy rains!

So, the club will adjust as our days get shorter, club nights will probably move to Saturday and or Sunday afternoons.  In addition, there is much to be gone over for the coming year, as well as over the winter months. That's right! The RC Club can continue even in the winter months. Some models can have waterproof/watertight compartments to allow use even in the rain and snow. As for aircraft, I know that electric models will struggle with shortened flight times due to the effects of cold on battery life.  However, fuel powered models can add skis to fly right off the snow. I actually found my old skis for my first plane as I was unearthing my old RC plane box.  So that might be on the table this winter....

But more importantly, winter is a time to prepare for the next season. It's the time to refurbish well used models.  It's also the time to build new things for the coming season. I have hopes to build one, maybe TWO new airplanes for next year. Another member says he has a number of planes that need attention to be ready for the next season. And any new members who want to build, and have a little help in the process, that's the time to do so.

We can also work with the park owner to ensure that any suggested needs for the club are acceptable to them before we build them. Some of the members with mid-size RC off-road vehicles are chatting about a track with obstacles... There's chat about a drone course. There's even chat about having a hard surface runway, so that models with smaller wheels can use it.  All of these things take time, energy, effort, and of course some money.  But they're all good and for the benefit of our area. If you have any interest in watching this development, please like and follow our Facebook page at Thorp Area RC Club. We hope to see more folks in the club soon.
