Winter is just around the corner

It’s hard to believe because of how nice the weather is while I am writing this, but winter is just around the corner. This means the Old Farmer’s Almanac, the one that has been around for over 200 years, has put out their winter forecast. What does it say for our region?

They predict that our winter will not be as cold as usual. Average winter temps in Wisconsin range from lows in the teens to highs in the low 30s. That doesn’t really reflect the below zero days I have lived through. But if that is the average, and it isn’t going to be as cold as usual in our area, maybe the temperatures will be tolerable for most of the winter. They are predicting the coldest temps will occur in early November, early and late January, late February, and early March. That sounds like most of the winter to me, but apparently we are skipping December.

In regard to snowfall, they are saying it will be below average. The average in our area is 40-50 inches. So below average must mean not a lot. The snowiest periods are predicted to be late November, late December, mid and late January, early February, and mid-March. That must mean we will get some snow each month, but not a lot. I would just be happy if it is spread out instead of coming 10-12 inches at a time. And maybe spring will be here by the end of March, the old in like a lion, out like a lamb thing.

It looks like the areas that will be hit the worst are Washington state and the area around Kentucky. Those two parts of the U.S. are supposed to be cold and snowy this winter. They can have it.

As a kid I didn’t really much like the cold, I still don’t. I could deal with the snow, but that is because all I was required to do was play in it. I didn’t have to shovel it. And I didn’t mind the occasional snow day from school. That meant staying home and getting to watch Captain Kangaroo and Romper Room. I’m probably dating myself there as kids today would have no idea what those TV show were. They just don’t know what they missed out on.

For now, the sun is shining, there is a nice breeze, and as far as I am concerned, it can last for awhile yet. After all, the Farmer’s Almanac isn’t predicting cold or snow until November.
