Thursday, April 25, the Owen-Withee Varsity Track Team traveled to Augusta for the Beaver Invitational. There were seven teams, including conference competition - Loyal, Colby, and Columbus. With the Blackhawks taking home 25 top 3 finishes throughout the night, the boys and girls team both secured 1st place team finishes at the Beaver Invitational. This is the first meet in Coach Goerlitz’s term where both the boys and girls took home first-place finishes. This gives the athletes a lot of motivation and hope as they begin planning for the conference meet in two weeks. The Neillsville boys have secured the conference title for the past 7 years, however, last year the boys were just in reach of the title, missing it by 6 points. This year they are even more hungry. The girl’s conference title has been passed around over the past few years. Last year Loyal took it home with a senior-heavy team, this year the girl’s title is up
Much like the team’s last performance in Augusta, the Owen-Withee Track Team “took to it” at the Gilman Invitational. This time, however, there were 10 teams in total. The boys swept the boards in team-ranking beating out 2nd place by over 50 points. The O-W girls’ team took 2nd, 20 points short of Ladysmith’s first-place finish.
Not only did Owen-Withee soar past conference competition and some larger teams such as Ladysmith and Prentice, but along the way they happened to break two school records. The first broken record of the night was in the boys’ 4x200m relay which consisted of Mason Gay, Brandon Geldernick, Dominic Sherwood and Vince Henke. The previous school record was 1:37.1. The boys put their best spikes on and beat that record by 2.79 seconds. Shortly after, Kendall Weiler ran the girls 300m hurdles. Going into the night she knew she had to beat the previous school record of 49.25 to gain ownership of it. Kendall did exactly that beating it by .09 of a second. Congratulations to both school record holders on their accomplishment.
