Owen-Withee Softball ends season at Plum City

The Blackhawk softball season is over for the present, Owen-Withee falling to Elmwood/Plum City 2-12 Thursday, May 16 in the Division 5 regional. Blackhawks head coach Zach Feind had the following to say on the season as a whole and looking forward to next year.

“We struggled to put together a complete game this season,” Feind said. “If we pitched well we didn't play defense, and if we played good defense we didn't pitch well. If we pitched and played good defense we struggled to hit. So overall we were 1-16 and couldn't put everything together in any one game. In doing that I feel like we beat ourselves more often than other teams beat us.”

With that said, Coach Feind said batting had improved.

“All of the returning players increased their batting averages and on base percentages from last season,” he said. “And when we got on base we ran on teams. Batting would be the biggest thing that went well this season for me. Things that didn't go well included pitching and defense. Pitchers just struggled to consistently throw strikes, and defensively we had a hard time limiting our errors and letting mistakes compound on us.”

With catcher Reina Arndt and first baseman Carmin Moser both graduating with the Class of 2024, Coach Feind had words of praise.

“Both were tremendous leaders for us this season and will be missed next season,” he said of Arndt and Moser.

As for next year, Feind said the team was hoping to return seven sophomores, including Adalie Hatlestad, Kendal Mueller, Lilli Stinson, Macy Devine, Dharma Cook, Isabella Lewien, and Lydia Van Ark, as well as two freshmen next season, Riley Renderman and Annabelle Zacharias.

As for the returning players, Feind said that, “all took good strides at the plate this season.” Included in the group are three pitchers (Adalie Hatlestad, Lilli Stinson, and Isabella Lewien) who pitched all but four innings this season.

“We have to throw more strikes consistently, but each of these three girls showed great promise throughout the season,” he said.
