Representative Karen Hurd receives Friend of Towns Award

Posted

Representative Karen Hurd was recently awarded the 2023-24 Friend of the Towns Award by the Wisconsin Towns Association, recognizing her efforts supporting town interests.

“From day one in the Assembly, Representative Hurd has supported towns and worked to empower local officials,” said Jerry Derr, Wisconsin Towns Association President. “Frequently meeting with town officials in her district, Representative Hurd understands local government issues and has become a strong advocate.”

Representative Hurd authored several bills ensuring or restoring local decision-making. Most notably, Representative Hurd authored a critical effort to restore democratic representation to town residents without a voice in local regulation. Another effort sought to ensure notification and involvement of local elected leaders throughout the implementation of certain federal programs.

Friends of town government share a core belief that the best decisions occur in a decentralized system and closest to the people. They understand that local government leadership is the fuel for inventive solutions to public sector challenges and the key to unlocking the power of democracy.

“Representative Hurd is a real asset to towns and to her community, seeking common sense solutions to historically complex issues regardless of how difficult they are to address,” added Mike Koles, Executive Director of the Wisconsin Towns Association. “She is well deserving of recognition as a Friend of the Towns.”
