Veteran Owen-Withee High School boys basketball coach, Russ Weiler reach a milestone earlier this season, when he earned his 300th head coaching win. Weiler reached that mark during the Christmas break, when the Blackhawks beat Lakeland at the Stratford holiday tournament. Weiler is an O-W graduate, who took over as boys basketball coach in 2000. He now has 250 (actually now 260) wins at Owen-Withee, including 21 last season and that is the first time an O-W boys basketball team has won 20 games or more in a season. Weiler also won 52 games as head coach at Granton, between 1994 and 2000. He had back-to-back winning seasons with the Bulldogs in 1997 and 1998 and that’s the only time Granton has been above .500 in boys basketball in consecutive seasons since the Bulldogs had winning seasons for Bruce Rayhorn in 1981 and 1982.
When asked how it felt to reach this milestone Weiler said, “It is about all the players that I have coached over the years, it is great seeing and talking to them after high school about their families and careers that is important to me more than the wins. It is the people that you meet and the ones that consistently support the team and players.”
